Texas EDGE transfer and former Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff standout Billy Walton committed to SMU, he announced on Twitter. He’ll have four years of eligibility remaining.

Walton played in two games during the 2023 season. He did not record any statistics for the Longhorns during his lone season in Austin. Walton announced plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal on April 15.

Walton was ranked as the No. 488 overall recruit, the No. 42 EDGE, and the No 80 player in Texas according to the On3 Industry Ranking. On3 ranked him as the No. 47 EDGE and the No. 66 player in Texas.

Once again, SMU has an impressive haul of transfers on board for the 2024 season. The Mustangs head to the ACC this summer and begin Year 3 of the Rhett Lashlee era. In 2023, the program capture the AAC Championship and won 11 games.

Walton held offers from over 20 schools during his high school recruitment, including Texas A&M, Tennessee and Oklahoma State, among a slew of others. SMU was also among those programs to offer.

At South Oak Cliff, Walton won back-to-back state championships to close out his high school career. He was a former Oklahoma State commit before the Longhorns came calling, flipping him late.
