SMU running back Tre Siggers will play his final season of college football elsewhere, entering the NCAA Transfer Portal on Monday, sources told On3. Next year will be his seventh season of college football.

Rhett Lashlee and his staff brought in a pair of running backs from the transfer portal already with former four-star prospects Jaylan Knighton and LJ Johnson joining the backfield. Add in returners like Tyler Lavine, Velton Gardner and Camar Wheaton, SMU’s room is packed.

Originally from Duncanville, Texas, Siggers signed with North Texas in the 2017 recruiting class. After redshirting, he rushed for 1,311 yards and seven scores on 237 attempts in 26 games over a three-year stretch.

He then transferred to SMU, where he led the Mustangs in rushing in 2021. With four starts over 11 games, Siggers amassed 727 yards and and nine touchdowns on 147 carries for SMU. In 2022, he was hampered by injuries, notching 60 carries for 229 yards and four touchdowns in four games.

According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Siggers ranked as the No. 123 overall running back and No. 191 overall prospect in Texas.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA transfer portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be  contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
