SMU Basketball will not have its home game against Wichita State rescheduled, sources tell On The Pony Express. The matchup of American Athletic Conference teams originally postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Shockers program was postponed again due to weather in Dallas on Feb. 3.

The game for SMU Basketball will be a no contest due to weather causing the second delay, per league rules. The school confirmed the news in a statement.

“Obviously, we are disappointed to lose out on a home game and how this might negatively impact our quest for a regular-season conference championship,” SMU athletic director Rick Hart said in a statement. “That said, we simply could not find a date that would work and be in the best interest of our student-athlete health and welfare. In our opinion, Wichita State made an honest effort to play the game, but again, with the regular season end in sight, we simply could not make it work.

“Our focus will be on winning the remaining games on the schedule and striving for an AAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth.”

SMU Basketball sits at 19-6 overall and 10-3 in AAC play with a matchup against Tulsa set for Wednesday night in Dallas at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+. The Mustangs are a game behind Houston, which hosts SMU Basketball on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT on ESPN.

After a bit of a slow start on Sunday against Memphis, SMU Basketball roared away from the Tigers to win 73-57. Head coach Tim Jankovich was thrilled with the effort from his team.

“What a game. I don’t even know where to start, great defense,” Jankovich said. “Our guys were so on point taking care of the things we felt like we needed to do that were so important. They were on it. Our effort was great, recognition was great. Their decisions on the defensive end, for the most part, ours, were so good. Memphis does a great job and this is their style and it’s very effective. They make it difficult to dictate from an offensive standpoint.”

Kendric Davis healthy for SMU Basketball’s push

The good news for SMU Basketball is star point guard Kendric Davis is healthy. The favorite for the AAC Player of the Year added 27 points in the win over Memphis after missing the Temple loss due to injury. Jankovich held out Davis in that game to get him healthy and it paid off.

“He looks like it’s pretty healed now,” Jankovich said. “But he was limping in the East Carolina game. He played, I kept trying to take him out but he said he was okay. Sometimes when you do that, it can get worse. It was never awful, don’t get me wrong, but it was to where we’re looking down the barrel of the season, I didn’t want to risk it getting worse.”

SMU Basketball sits squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble as one of the next four teams in the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. SMU still has work to do, according to On3’s Eric Prisbell.
