Spencer Rattler at South Carolina's 2024 Pro Day

With the NFL Draft just a week away, on Thursday, South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains made it clear that whoever drafts Spencer Rattler is getting more than just a good quarterback.

“The biggest thing I tell these NFL GMs and coaches that call me about Spencer is his ability to overcome adversity and deal with prosperity. Spencer has done it,” said Loggains. “Going through hard times in life isn’t fun but in the NFL you’re gonna go through that… You gotta be able to stand in there and take it on the chin and own the bad and praise the good. I think Spencer has gone through all of that and he’s better for it. I think he’s fireproof and ready to go.”

Having spent 13 years coaching in the NFL, including seven years as an offensive coordinator, Loggains knows firsthand what it takes to play professionally. That’s why so many teams have been interested in his input about Rattler after having the chance to work with him in 2023.

“I’ve got a lot of calls and it’s picked up over the last week… You’re talking about an extremely tough player that has an unbelievable throwing motion. I hope my son throws like him… He’s an extremely blessed thrower. He’s a great teammate. He’s an unbelievable teammate.”

Being a great teammate is one thing Loggains couldn’t help but extend on. Especially knowing that coming out of high school Rattler was negatively portrayed in the Netflix series, QB1.

“I guess there was a show that was silly back (when he was in high school) and I don’t think it portrayed him the right way from what I saw. What I see is an unbelievable guy that cares about his teammates. Go ask Luke Doty, LaNorris Sellers, Tanner Bailey what they think about Spencer Rattler. That was an unbelievably close room because our leader was Spencer. It wasn’t me, it was Spencer. He did everything the right way, he took everyone in, (and) cared about the other guys in the room.”

Since finishing his time at South Carolina, Rattler has only continued to make headlines. Named the MVP of the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl, Rattler went a perfect 4-for-4 through the air for 65 yards and threw for a touchdown.

“He never complained about a leaky offensive line and he’s (still) making all of these NFL throws and these three level concepts… Everybody now is starting to see it. You’re getting a guy with high character who has a great mom and dad.”
