Former South Carolina graduate assistant-turned-quarterback Zeb Noland has landed an on-field coaching position, and it’s working for another recent Gamecocks assistant.

Noland has been hired as the quarterbacks coach at Murray State, the school announced on Friday.

The Racers’ head football coach is Jody Wright, who spent the past two seasons as the tight ends coach for Shane Beamer at USC.

It is the first on-field assistant coaching job for Noland, who played college football at Iowa State, North Dakota State, and South Carolina.

Noland’s story was one of the most interesting in college football during the 2021 season, which was also Shane Beamer’s first at the helm of the Gamecocks’ program.

He arrived at USC in May of 2021 as a graduate assistant. After an injury sidelined projected starter Luke Doty, Noland was elevated from a member of the coaching staff to the active roster, given that he still had one season of college eligibility remaining.

Noland ended up starting for South Carolina in the season opener against Eastern Illinois, throwing for 121 yards and four touchdowns. He also helped the Gamecocks win the following week on the road against East Carolina.

The Georgia native came off the bench for USC at home against Vanderbilt, going 5 for 8 and throwing the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. His final college performance was in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against North Carolina.

Noland returned to his graduate assistant role at USC for the 2022 season after his playing career ended. Now, he will have an opportunity to return to the sidelines in the Missouri Valley Conference as an on-field staff member.
