Shane Beamer: Marcus Satterfield 'called every single play'

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer strongly shot down rumors and online theories that offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield did not call plays during Gamecock football’s 63-point performance on Saturday against Tennessee.

“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,” Beamer said during his Sunday teleconference. “He put the game plan together along with the rest of the offensive staff and he called every single play last night.”

South Carolina put up 606 yards of offense on the Volunteers in the 25-point win, including an 8 of 11 performance on third down and a monumental performance from quarterback Spencer Rattler.

While it was a huge performance just a week after the USC offense was shut out against Florida (the lone Gamecocks touchdown came on a fake punt), Beamer seemed incredulous as to how the idea that Satterfield did not call the offense began to circulate.

“Were these people on the headphones last night?” he asked. “No disrespect, but anybody that watched the game, I mean, the guy’s on the sideline. All you’ve got to do is watch the game and see that he’s calling the plays.”

A rewatch of the contest by GamecockCentral.com indeed showed Satterfield on multiple occasions consulting his play sheet and calling out plays either from the sideline or in the huddle during a timeout.

Beamer did recount a moment during the game in which he strategized with Satterfield about a play call.

“I think there was one instance last night where I told him to take a shot and throw the ball down the field and other than that he did everything last night,” Beamer said. “Did a great job of it.”

Rattler’s final stat line saw him go 30 of 37 through the air for 438 yards and 6 touchdowns. He took just one sack and finished with 5 rushes for 16 yards.

Jaheim Bell led Gamecock football in rushing with 17 attempts for 82 yards, while Antwane “Juice” Wells added a big game through the air with 11 receptions for 177 yards. Wells had a rushing touchdown, while Dakereon Joyner scored a pair on the ground as a wildcat quarterback.

Josh Vann had two touchdown receptions, while Jalen Brooks and JuJu McDowell added one each.

The 63 points that South Carolina scored on Tennessee inside Williams-Brice Stadium constituted the highest point total ever surrendered by the Volunteers in an SEC contest. That beat a 62-point mark by Steve Spurrier’s Florida Gators in 1995, according to the Associated Press.
