Rattler, Legette crack top 10 in Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest NFL Draft position rankings

Spencer Rattler and Xavier Legette are South Carolina’s most notable prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft class. The two garnered national attention last season and received more from an esteemed source on Friday.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. put out his latest 2024 NFL Draft “Big Board” rankings last week. While no Gamecocks cracked his overall top 25, both Legette and Rattler placed in the top 10 at their respective positions.

Rattler was ranked seventh in a group of quarterbacks that features multiple Heismann Trophy winners. Here’s how the rest of the top 10 shook out:

  1. Caleb Williams (Southern California)
  2. Jayden Daniels (LSU)
  3. Drake Maye (North Carolina)
  4. J.J. McCarthy (Michigan)
  5. Michael Penix Jr. (Washington)
  6. Bo Nix (Oregon)
  7. Spencer Rattler (South Carolina)
  8. Michael Pratt (Tulane)
  9. Joe Milton III (Tennessee)
  10. Jordan Travis (Florida State)

After starting his career at Oklahoma, Rattler firmly placed himself back into draft consideration with two solid seasons in Columbia. He totaled 6,212 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions across 25 starts with the Gamecocks. Rattler also completed 539 of 798 total passes for a completion percentage of 67.5%.

Legette was also ranked in the bottom half of the top 10 at his position, sitting in eighth. The other top 10 wide receivers are as follows:

  1. Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State)
  2. Rome Odunze (Washington)
  3. Malik Nabers (LSU)
  4. Brian Thomas Jr. (LSU)
  5. Keon Coleman (Florida State)
  6. Xavier Worthy (Texas)
  7. Adonai Mitchell (Texas)
  8. Xavier Legette (South Carolina)
  9. Ladd McConkey (Georgia)
  10. Troy Franklin (Oregon)

Legette was South Carolina’s breakout star of 2023 season and was duly rewarded with increased draft stock. He finished with 1,255 yards and seven scores on 71 catches last year, culminating in an All-SEC First Team nod. Overall, Legette finished his college career with 1,678 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Trey Knox also received some consideration from Kiper amongst the top fullback and halfback prospects in the draft. Kiper placed the former graduate student tight end in sixth on his list.

Both Rattler and Legette are currently ramping up their preparations for the Reese’s Senior Bowl on Feb. 4. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network.
