GC LIVE: Beamer speaks following spring practice No.9 | South Carolina Gamecocks

Nine practices in spring and competition remains high at multiple positions. Especially in South Carolina’s quarterback room.

This past Saturday, the Gamecocks held their first inter-squad scrimmage, giving Shane Beamer and the coaching staff a chance to see how players respond in a game-like setting at Williams-Brice Stadium.

“I don’t know if there was separation. There maybe was in some ways. It was kind of tough,” said Beamer. “I thought all the quarterbacks did a good job of protecting the football. There were no turnovers at all in the scrimmage, which is rare in any scrimmage. There was a ball that Judge Collier made a great play on, a fumble that Mazeo Bennett was hustling and got the ball back for the offense, but the offense didn’t turn the ball over, which was great.”

Along with protecting the football, Beamer was complimentary of each of his quarterback.

LaNorris (Sellers), when he was in there, he made a couple of nice throws downfield. I thought Robby Ashford did a good job with pocket presence and stepping up in the pocket and making throws. Dante Reno got in there and really did some good stuff in practice on Thursday and then did some stuff in the scrimmage. Davis Beville as well. And then Luke (Doty) worked some at quarterback.”

Not that it should surprise anybody but based on Beamer’s comments, don’t expect a depth chart for South Carolina’s QB room to come out anytime soon.

“We’re still competing and those guys continue to make each other better. (Practice No.9 on Tuesday) was a big day and (practice on) Thursday will be a big day, then Saturday will be our last scrimmage before the spring game and that will be a big day also.  But I like the progress that they’re all making. If you ask, okay, who made a jump? I thought Robby Ashford made some nice throws and did some good stuff.”
