South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler was named the top quarterback on the American team for his practice performance at the Senior Bowl this week following a vote from his teammates on defense, according to the game’s executive director Jim Nagy.

Rattler has consistently created a buzz throughout the week from those on the ground in Mobile, Ala. for the premier college football all-star game of NFL Draft hopefuls.

Lance Zierlein and Eric Edholm, two draft analysts for NFL.com, praised Rattler’s for his performance on Wednesday, Day 2 of practices.

“Like most of the quarterbacks on Day 1, Rattler seemed to be getting his footing underneath him, but he might have been the best of the American Team QB crop,” a report from the duo said. “On Wednesday, Rattler appeared to take the biggest step forward of the four American Team quarterbacks, showing more decisiveness, better decision-making and good ball placement. He even hooked up with (Xavier) Legette on a corner route midway through practice, one of a few nice connections between the teammates. It has been a very solid start to the week for Rattler.”

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer was in Mobile along with several other staff members to watch Rattler and Legette perform.

“Had a chance to watch Xavier and Spencer practice,” Beamer said Friday. “And it’s great seeing those guys, first of all, two great representatives of our program. So I really enjoyed getting to watch them, but also getting to talk to them and visit with them. And it’s been great getting to hear from so many NFL personnel while we were down in Mobile that afternoon about both those guys and how impressive they’ve been, not just on the field and practice, but in interviews that take place down at the Senior Bowl and whatnot as well. So wish them luck in the game tomorrow.”

Rattler completed 900-of-1,313 career passes (68.5 pct.) for 10,807 yards with 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions at Oklahoma and South Carolina combined.

This past year for the Gamecocks, Rattler started all 12 games, completing 275-of-389 passes for 3,186 with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was selected as a Rex Enright Team Captain and a co-winner of the Steve Wadiak Team MVP Award.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl game takes place on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET with the NFL Network carrying the action.
