South Carolina officially announced the hire of Sean Ryan as an offensive analyst a couple of weeks ago and it appears that his wealth of experience coaching in the NFL is already being put to use.

Ryan, who was most recently the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers and has 15 years of experience in the league, joins new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains in bringing a combined three decades of experience at that level to the Gamecocks’ program.

While a lot of space has already been used this offseason to talk about Loggains and what he hopes to bring to the offense, South Carolina redshirt freshman Tanner Bailey offered the first bit of real feedback on Ryan since he arrived when the quarterback was on the Garnet Trust Hour on 107.5 The Game Tuesday.

“A great addition,” Bailey said of Ryan. “Obviously, D-Lo, the first few weeks, he was kind of doing it by himself. We have Riley Watkins, who is a GA, who has done a great job as well. Coach Ryan comes in, obviously a long-time NFL vet guy as well.”

Bailey, a former four-star prospect from Gordo, Ala. who is fighting it out for playing time this season in a loaded QB room, provided insight on Ryan’s coaching style.

“He’s been kinda you know, you make a throw, you maybe miss a read, you maybe threw it a little late or something, ‘Hey, what do you see right there?’ Stuff like that,” Bailey continued. “That’s been really good to have somebody with a lot of knowledge along with D-Lo and Riley to kind of get some extra opinion from, I guess you could say. Learning from all of those guys as well as Spencer (Rattler) and Luke (Doty), me being a redshirt freshman now, just having all of those guys with so much knowledge and passion for the game, it’s really fun to learn from them.”

Bailey, who was a summer enrollee last year and thus didn’t get to go through spring practice, has been using his first spring in Columbia to focus on some technical aspects of his game.

“D-Lo has been working with me on some fundamental stuff,” Bailey said. “Coach Sean Ryan, he’s helped me a lot in that aspect as well, just not overstriding, ball placement, stuff like that.”

Bailey and the Gamecocks will wrap up their spring with the Garnet and Black Spring Game this Saturday night at 7 at Williams-Brice Stadium.
