When South Carolina brought in Zachary Davis under the previous staff, there were high hopes about the high school point guard and what he could turn into.

It might take some time, but at some point, the lanky 6-foot-7 guard was going to tap into some of that potential.

Entering his second season, it seems like he’s starting to turn a corner.

“He’s a lot stronger this year. That comes with lifting weights and being in college,” Jacobi Wright said. “The game is slowing down for him. I think he’s definitely going to help us more this year. I’ve seen a huge jump.”

The biggest just is easy to see–literally–with Davis beginning to fill out some of that slender frame he came to South Carolina with.

He’s listed now at 194 pounds, up from last season, and his teammates are seeing his game start to grow with it. Pair that with natural length and athleticism and it’s a positive development for a Gamecocks team that needs it.

“That physical part then the confidence part. His shooting, his attacking to the rim. He’s become an unbelievable cutter without the ball. He’s really made big strides from last season to this season. I think Zach Davis has a chance to be a very good player and have a great career here and at the next level,” Meechie Johnson said.

“I’m excited to see him out there cause when he’s in the lineup he gives you things you may not see from others. That’s from his cutting, defense, his activity, his arms, his length. He’s very improved in his strength and I think he’ll be able to guard his position.”

Davis certainly flashed last season at South Carolina, averaging 2.2 points and shooting 38.2 percent from the field. Davis hauled in 2.2 rebounds per game.

He averaged 2.6 points and 2.1 rebounds in SEC play on 43.6 percent shooting. He also has the potential to be a good defender and someone that can create issues on the floor.

“He’s really sneaky smooth. I don’t know how to explain it. But he comes off ball screens and you’re thinking ‘I’m here and in front of him.’ But he slides right by you,” Stephen Clark said. “He’s also a very good defender and only getting bigger and stronger. He’ll be key going forward and in the years to come.”

Davis and the rest of the South Carolina team is in the Bahamas as part of a two-game foreign tour as the Gamecocks prepare for year two under Lamont Paris.
