Left-handed pitcher Alex Valentin has committed to South Carolina, he announced on social media Friday afternoon.

“@GamecockBasebll right where i belong! 100% committed,” Valentin wrote in his post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Valentin, who’s listed at 6-foot, 225 pounds, spent one season at Texas State, where he went 5-5 with a 6.12 ERA in 16 appearances, 11 of which were starts. He struck out 58 batters and walked 37 in 67.2 innings pitched. Opponents batted .230 against him.

Valentin earned the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after pitching 6.1 innings of one-run ball against Grand Canyon on March 2. In that outing, he allowed just two hits and struck out six with two walks. He made it through the sixth inning in six of his starts this past season.

Walks were a big issue for Valentin this year as he finished with the second-highest total on the Bobcats’ pitching staff. He only had one outing where he didn’t issue any walks and had as many as seven in a six-inning start against Coastal Carolina on March 28. He also surrendered 10 home runs, more than any Texas State pitcher.

Before joining Texas State, the Hollywood, FL native spent the 2024 campaign at Nova Southeastern University, located in Fort Lauderdale. Pitching in 12 games with nine starts, he went 3-3 with a 5.87 ERA and finished with 58 strikeouts and 28 walks in 46 innings.

Valentin will have two years of eligibility remaining as he joins South Carolina next season. The Gamecocks have now added 14 transfers in the current portal cycle, eight being pitchers.

The transfer portal opened on Monday, June 2, and will remain open until July 1 for all players.
