Gamecocks set to Welcome Home new DL coach

Shane Beamer is on the verge of officially tabbing a new assistant, and it’s a familiar name to South Carolina Gamecocks fans.

Pending standard clearances such as a contract and Board of Trustees approval, former USC standout Travian Robertson is expected to be named as Beamer’s defensive line coach, according to GamecockCentral.com sources. Robertson would replace Jimmy Lindsey, who recently departed for the same position at LSU.

After a standout career under Steve Spurrier in Columbia from 2007 until 2011, Robertson was drafted in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He spent three seasons with the club, then portions of the 2014 season with Seattle and Washington.

Robertson’s collegiate coaching career began as a graduate assistant under former USC assistant Shawn Elliott at Georgia State. His first on-field job was at Albany State in 2018 prior to returning to Georgia State as the full time defensive line coach. He served in that capacity for three seasons beginning in 2019. The 2022 season was his first at Tulane under head coach Willie Fritz.

The Laurinburg, North Carolina native signed with the Gamecocks as part of the highly-ranked 2007 recruiting class, spurning Clemson and numerous others in the process.

Robertson was rated as a four-star prospect and the nation’s 93rd-overall player according to historical data from the On3 Industry Ranking.

As a player at South Carolina, Robertson had carry-over with current USC head coach Shane Beamer, who was an assistant under Steve Spurrier from 2007 until 2010. Robertson was a team captain for the 2011 team.

In his five-year career in Columbia, Robertson played in 56 games, racking up 123 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

During his three seasons as an assistant at Georgia State, the Panthers set the single season school record for sacks in 2021 with 38. In that same campaign, Georgia State ranked in the top 25 nationally in sacks and was 15th in tackles for loss per game.

His defensive line in 2020 with GSU allowed a program historical low of 3.86 yards per rush.
