Shane Beamer provides update on South Carolina football through nine spring practices - 4/9/24

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer met with the media Tuesday to provide an update on how spring football practices are going for the Gamecocks.

Below is a quick summary of what Beamer had to say following practice No.9. South Carolina will return to the field Thursday morning for practice No.10.

– Shane Beamer shares that they went into more situational work today during practice No.9.

– Congratulates Dawn Staley and USC WBB on their national championship and how incredible it was to be there in Cleveland on Sunday. “So happy for them. Great group of young ladies on that team that I’ve been able to get to know.” Also gives a shoutout to the women’s golf team. Wishes baseball well tonight up in Charlotte.

– A few guys weren’t active today. JT Geer, Nick Emmanwori, Brady Hunt. Tonka was limited.

– Thought all the QBs did a good job of protecting the ball. No turnovers by any of the QBs. LaNorris Sellers made some nice throws down field, Robby Ashford stepped up in the pocket well, Dante Reno did some good things in practice and did some good things in the scrimmage as well. As far as making a “jump” thought Ashford did some good things but calls it too early to say there’s been separation in that room.

– QBs were live in the scrimmage. Doesn’t like that they get hit but it’s one thing they need to get used to at times as well as show off what they can do with their feet. Had about 60 plays and did a lot of additional situational work.

– Both the WR and TE rooms are doing a good job of complimenting each other. Jared Brown had a nice catch and run. Mazeo Bennett stood out on Saturday in the scrimmage

– Shawn Elliott spends the bulk of his time with the TEs but when he sees something he bounces ideas off of Dowell Loggains and Lonnie Teasley

– Calls it huge for the younger players to have a chance to go through spring practices. Of the five freshmen who started games last year for them, the majority of them missed out of spring ball. Specifically mentions the impact it’s been able to have on OL like Tree and Baugh.

– OL Jaxon Hughes has decided to transfer after spending one season at USC. A walk-on who isn’t healthy right now, Beamer says he’s looking to go somewhere for his sixth year to earn a scholarship. Played two games last season and started one game for USC but just battled injuries.

– Calls the spring portal a challenge because the focus is on keeping your own roster but if there’s someone out there that he thinks can help the teams then they’ll make that call. Won’t really know what the team will look like until May.
