Eric Gentry injury update: USC linebacker to redshirt 2024 season

The hits keep on coming for the USC defense as linebacker Eric Gentry is added to the growing list of standouts who won’t suit up again for the Trojans on that side of the ball. Gentry plans to use his redshirt season while sitting out the remainder of the season after sustaining a series of concussions.
Gentry announced his decision on social media, addressed to the Trojan Family.
“It breaks my heart that I share with you all my decision to redshirt for the remainder of the season due to a series of concussions in a short period of time. This decision has not been easy, but after thoughtful consideration and discussions with my family and the coaching staff, I know it’s the right choice for my well-being and long-term health,” Gentry wrote.
In this era of college football when players not receiving playing time or looking for more NIL money will hold out or threaten redshirting, Gentry made sure to state that neither of those became a factor in this decision.
“My love for this team, this program, and all of you is unwavering,” Gentry said. “I give it my all on the field thanks to Allah SWT, and I will continue to support my teammates and the Trojans in every way I can as I focus on getting back to full health.”

Gentry was injured against Wisconsin on a seemingly routine play when he dove over the top of a tackle and in an attempt to somersault, landed on his head. He left the game and did not return.
The Trojans have played two games without Gentry and lost them both — first on the road at Minnesota and then at home to Penn State. In both games, it felt as though Gentry would have made a significant difference in the outcome. He still ranks third on the team with 30 tackles and leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
