JuJu Watkins vs. Paige Bueckers

Yes, this game will be USC vs UConn, but all the conversation heading in will be about the two superstars facing off. UConn’s Paige Bueckers, a 6-foot guard, has scored in double-digits in all but the season-opener this year. She’s been red-hot in the tournament, shooting 52% from the floor and scoring 28, 35 and 24 points in wins over Jackson State, Syracuse and Duke. She leads UConn in scoring at 21.9 points per game. She’s also No. 1 in blocks, No. 2 in steals and assists, and No. 3 in rebounds.

Watkins hasn’t been nearly as efficient from the floor in the tournament, but she’s scored 23, 28 and 30 points in USC’s three wins. It’s tough to see USC winning if Watkins needs another 28 shots to score 39 points as she did against Baylor. And she’ll need to dial in from three as well. Outside of hitting 4-of-8 deep shots against Kansas, Watkins is just 5-of-37 from 3-point range over six of her last seven games. Their teammates will have plenty of say in which team wins on Monday night. But these headliners will be counted on to make big shots over the course of all 40 minutes.

Last time out

USC overcame a rough third quarter against Baylor and tightened up over the final five minutes of the game to secure a 74-70 win. McKenzie Forbes had 14 points and Rayah Marshall collected a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Watkins struggled at times from the floor but was a clutch 12-of-13 from the free throw line including hitting six in a row late to secure the win. Kaitlyn Davis had three big points late and Kayla Williams came off the bench to provide elite defense at the end of the game for the Trojans.

UConn held No. 7 Duke to just 13 points in the first half as the Huskies hung on in the fourth quarter to finish off a 53-45 win over the Blue Devils. UConn has dealt with injuries all year and played just six players against Duke. Forward Aaliyah Edwards and guard KK Arnold each scored 12. They were the only two Huskies besides Bueckers to score more than three points against Duke. UConn shot just 3-for-16 from deep and got outrebounded 43-28 by Duke, including allowing 16 offensive rebounds. The game turned on the Huskies’ ability to force turnovers as UConn collected 14 steals and forced 23 Duke turnovers.
