Prophet Brown injury update: USC defensive back to miss first part of the season

The USC Trojans will be without veteran defensive back Prophet Brown for at least the first part of the season, head coach Lincoln Riley announced following Friday’s fall camp practice.
Riley said Brown suffered a non-contact injury and called it “kind of a unique situation.” He said the veteran defender is “going to miss certainly the first part of the season” but held out hope that he could return at some point this year.
“We’ll see how it plays out,” Riley said. “Certainly hopeful to get him back here at some point and think that’s very much a real possibility. We’ll see how that progresses.”
A career backup, Brown had turned himself into a real option to start this fall at nickel for the Trojans. Defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn praised Brown earlier this week and said he’s one of the guys they trust the most in the secondary.

“Hate it for him because he’s been playing really well,” Riley said. “Obviously has had one of the more rapid ascents here in terms of all the years that he’s been here and watching him improve as a player and become a big part of this team.”
This is the first injury of real significance to hit the Trojans this fall. USC has lots of options in the secondary and could play transfer defensive back DJ Harvey in the slot. True freshman Alex Graham has made an early impact as well. And standout safety Kamari Ramsey played there some last season and worked there during the spring as well.
In four years at USC, Brown appeared in 39 games with one start (as a true freshman against Cal in 2021). He’s recorded 31 tackles and two pass breakups.
