USC’s baseball program is in need of a new head coach after Director of Athletics Mike Bohn announced Monday that the school and head coach Jason Gill agreed to part ways.

“We are thankful to Jason for his three years of service to our university and baseball program,” Bohn said in a statement released by the school. “Jason’s first season at USC was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and that created a difficult environment to navigate in the ensuing two years. We appreciate that Jason led us through those challenging circumstances. However, we ultimately determined it was in our shared best interest to part ways at this time. We wish Jason and his family all the best moving forward.”

Gill coached the Trojans for three seasons and compiled a 60-59 record.

“I enjoyed my time at USC and appreciated the opportunity to lead its baseball program,” Gill said in a statement. “I am excited to see what the future holds for me and my family, and I wish the players and the program the best.”

The Trojans got out to an 11-2 start this season, including an impressive series win at UCLA in mid-March. But after a three-game sweep of San Jose State in early April, USC dropped 10 of its next 11 games. The Trojans finished the year losing its final six conference games, getting swept by Washington and Stanford.

USC finished in last place in the Pac-12 this season with a record of 8-22 and did not make the eight-team field for the inaugural conference tournament.

The LA Times reported back in March that the university had long been investigating Gill due to allegations that he mistreated players and staff.

USC’s Elite Baseball History

It has been a long dry spell for USC baseball. It is the most storied program in college baseball history. The Trojans own 12 national championships and have appeared in the College World Series 21 times.

But USC has not posted a winning season over a full schedule since 2015. That was the last time USC advanced to the NCAA Division 1 Baseball Tournament. But USC lost twice that year to Virginia, the eventual national champions.

In the 76 years between 1930 and 2006, USC had three head baseball coaches. Sam Barry began his tenure in 1930. Rod Dedeaux and Barry were co-head coaches for a while until Dedeaux took over full time. And Mike Gillespie served as head coach from 1987-2006. Now, USC will be looking for its fifth head coach since 2007. Gill leaves with a record just over .500. The previous three did not reach that mark.

Chad Krueter went 111-117. Frank Cruz was 50-63. And Dan Hubbs was 188-200.

Bohn swung big-time for a marquee football coach to replace Clay Helton and landed Lincoln Riley. It will be very interesting to see where he goes with USC baseball. USC announced that a national search for the next head coach will begin immediately.

“We believe in the promise of USC baseball, and our expectation is to compete for national championships,” Bohn said in a statement. “We are determined to restore the unrivaled winning tradition of our program, and we will make the necessary commitments to ensure we successfully recruit an elite leader for our baseball program.”
