USC Trojans finish regular season No. 16 in College Football Playoff rankings

The USC Trojans held their position in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings and finished No. 16 following a 9-3 regular season.

The Trojans were No. 16 last week following a rivalry win over UCLA to finish their season and did not change after this weekend’s conference championship games around the country. That’s one spot below the Trojans’ high ranking this year. USC reached No. 15 following a win against Iowa and heading into the road game at Oregon.

USC posted two wins this season over teams that finished in teh Top 25 of the final CFP rankings. Michigan is at No. 18 and Iowa is No. 23. The Trojans dopped games against No. 5 Oregon and No. 11 Notre Dame. While the loss at Illinois registers as one of the key points of the season that USC would want a do-over, it doesn’t appear that loss kept USC out of the playoffs. The Trojans still would have been ranked behind Notre Dame, which didn’t make the playoffs after both Alabama and Miami squeezed in and the committee took two Group of 5 champions in James Madison and Tulane.

USC was a mainstay in the CFP rankings this season after spending the better part of two years outside of them. The Trojans were included at No. 20 of the first CFP rankings in 2023 (Week 9 of the season). USC dropped out that week and did not appear in the CFP rankings at all during the 2024 season.
