USC WR Ja'Kobi Lane injury update: 'Still inconclusive right now'

The USC Trojans (4-0, 2-0) played without standout wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane during their 45-31 win over the Michigan State Spartans (3-1, 0-1) on Saturday night.
Lane’s status for USC’s next game at Illinois remains up in the air. While the Illini will be coming off a thorough beating at the hands of No. 19 Indiana, that game has been billed all offseason as the true start of USC’s 2025 schedule.
“I would say still inconclusive right now,” head coach Lincoln Riley said of Lane’s status and whether it could be a short or long-term issue. “It was something that kind of popped up middle of the week from the game, that was a little bit unexpected. We’re just going to have to see how he feels.”
USC does have two byes in four weeks coming up, but they are sandwiched around some of the biggest games of the season. After Illinois, USC gets a bye week to prepare for a visit from Michigan and a trip to Notre Dame. Obviously getting Lane back for any or all of that would be huge for the Trojans.

“I don’t think it’ll be super long, but at the same time I certainly can’t sit here today and say he’s for sure going to play next week or the coming weeks.”
USC rolled up 45 points and 517 yards of offense against Michigan State without Lane available on Saturday night. But the next few weeks should present a different kind of challenge on the road and hosting a ranked Michigan team.
Makai Lemon had a big day in Lane’s absence, finishing with eight receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown. There were contributions from other receivers to fill the void, but none caught more than two receptiosn or had more than 23 receiving yards.
