Rutgers small forward Gavin Griffiths has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. Griffith, a former four-star recruit, will have multiple years of eligibility remaining.

Griffiths played in 32 games for Rutgers as a true freshman, making a handful of starts. He averaged 5.8 points per game and 2.2 rebounds in 18 minutes a night.

Griffiths played high school basketball at Kingswood-Oxford (Conn.) School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 43 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Since the transfer portal opened for basketball players more than a week ago, Griffiths is the third Rutgers player to enter the portal. Forward Mawot Mag and center Clifford Omoruyi both entered the portal within days of it opening.

Mag, a 6-foot-7 senior, averaged 9.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game this season for the Scarlet Knights. He has spent his entire four-year college career at Rutgers. The native of Australia is a former three-star recruit and was the No. 233 overall player in the nation from the 2020 cycle.

Omoruyi, a 6-foot-11 senior, averaged 10.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game this season for the Scarlet Knights. Omoruyi is a former four-star recruit and was the No. 47 overall player in the nation from the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

The departures will also leave the Rutgers coaching staff and head coach Steve Pikiell in a bit of a lurch as they welcome the best recruiting class in school history to campus as a pair of Top 3 recruits in the On3 industry ranking are set to join the program.

Five star forward and No. 2 player Ace Bailey has already signed with the Scarlet Knights and five star guard and No. 3 player Dylan Harper remains solidly committed to the program.

But it’ll now be on Pikiell and Co. to fill out the roster around those young talents with experienced options from the transfer portal, because how good Rutgers ends up being in the the 2024-25 season likely hinges on how well the roster can be rounded out around the pair of next-level talents in Bailey and Harper.

And the challenge got harder with Griffiths hitting the open market on Thursday.
