All-Atlantic-10 1st team center Josh Cohen has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after spending the 2023-24 season with the UMass Minutemen, per On3’s Jamie Shaw.

Cohen stands at 6-foot 10-inches tall and averaged 15.9 points and 6.9 rebounds this past season for UMass. He also earned All-Atlantic-10 honors for the season. It was his only season with UMass or playing in the Atlantic-10 conference.

Josh Cohen took to social media, where he posted a goodbye to UMass.

“UMass Nation! Thank you for everything you’ve done for me,” Cohen wrote. “Especially @coachFMartin , now it’s time for a new chapter on a story that is still being written. I have entered the transfer portal with one year to play.”

As a team, UMass went 20-11 and 11-7 in Atlantic-10 play this past season. The Minutemen got knocked out of the Atlantic-10 Tournament in a 14-point loss against VCU. It was head coach Frank Martin‘s second season in Amherst. He now has a 35-26 record overall at UMass.

Prior to coming to UMass, Josh Cohen spent four years at St. Francis, taking a redshirt and playing in three seasons there. While he was with St. Francis, Cohen was an All-Northeast Conference performer and he was also the Northeast Conference’s co-player of the year during the 2022-23 season.

For his career, Cohen is averaging 14.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He also has a career field goal percentage of 57.6% from the field and 32.4% from three-point range.

UMass and the Transfer Portal

The Transfer Portal for college basketball opened on Monday, March 18th. That’s the day after Selection Sunday, and it will be open for 45 days. Last season, a total of 1,842 men’s college basketball players entered the Transfer Portal. Teams competing in the NCAA Tournament won’t likely see any players leave during that time, but all teams will now begin their evaluations.

It’s only the first day that the Transfer Portal is open for college basketball. However, UMass has already lost three players to the Transfer Portal. Josh Cohen is, by far, the biggest name that the Minutemen lost. However, UMass also lost Robert Davis, a promising freshman, and Sawyer Mayhugh, a non-scholarship center.

Because of those losses in the portal, with more possibly on the way, Frank Martin will likely need to get to work and find a way to replace that outgoing talent by using the Transfer Portal himself.
