We extended Joe’s contract back to 4 years and raised his salary to $3.2m.

I get the extension because of the 4 year rule, but was last season worthy of a pay raise?

Has there ever been a coach at Miss State who has 8 or more wins not get a pay raise?

He was 13th on the SEC coaches salary list. He underachieved a little last year, but it's definitely worth a raise from $2.6M.

Yeah, I'm hardly a Moorhead guy, but no problem with a little raise. Had he been bumped up to 4 million, I'd have a problem

He was the next to lowest paid HC in the SEC and maybe the best bargain in CFB on a per win basis. This raise moves him from 13th to 11th until the other coaches get raises.

Yes. He was making less than Derrick Mason, Matt Luke, and Will Muschamp. Say what you want about Moorhead, but its laughable to say he couldn’t coach circles around all those guys. Even now, he’s making less than Chad Morris ($3.5 mill) and Jeremy Pruitt ($3.8 mill), neither of which has done anything. The raise amount was fair and it was deserved. He is also still the 2nd lowest paid coach in the West.

Wasn't there some "I'll take less $ so I can spend more on my staff" talk when he got hired?

8 wins at MSU always gets a pay raise, and it should.

That's what Cohen claimed, but I'm not sure we actually saw an increase in pay for assistant coaches. I guess that's hard to gauge when you hire all new people. Still, it obviously wasn't enough money for too many of them to stay.

Worth the extension but not the raise.

And there are those talking about paying over 4 million for ANOTHER 8 win season? This is why this program is considered the worst in the SEC.

Of course we won't have to worry about getting that far this year.

Not sure he has done anything at State to show that he can coach circles around any other corch in The SEC

I wouldn't have done either. No raise, no extension. 3 years remaining. Show me something in 2019 and then we will talk.

So you really think he is a worse coach than Matt Luke? Holy hell.

Even after the raise, we are basically paying the absolute minimum going rate for a head coach in the SEC. Not the minimum for an actual competent coach, the minimum for any coach, period. Even if Moorhead screws the pooch and we fire him, we’ve got to be able to show that we will provide fair compensation and security when we go after the next guy. Otherwise, we are going to be stuck with a **** hire. That’s just the price of doing business. And like it or not, 8 wins at MSU is always going to yield a similar pay bump to what you are seeing now.

I'm pretty sure Mullen didn't after the 2015 season where we went to the Belk Bowl. But that was because he got cross ways with the administration about his incessant late season job shopping. I pretty much knew when that happened that it was the beginning of the end of Mullen's tenure. Only reason he didn't leave in 2016 is that nobody wanted a 5-7 coach.

I mean, why would Matt Luke and Ole Miss even enter my mind when I was making this post. I guess that's just the MSU mentality that people still have. My reasoning had nothing to do with Ole Miss or Matt Luke at all.

I don't comprehend anything in this post. If we need to hire a a new guy for more money then we, you know, offer more money. It's why you can pay Rick Ray 1 million and the get Ben Howland for 2 million. Howland didn't care how much Rick Ray made.

You are seriously asking this? It’s relevant because Luke is objectively the worst and least qualified sitting head coach in the SEC. Therefore, his salary marks what should be (and now is) the bottom of the pay scale in the league. That is relevant when setting the compensation for our coach.

If you have a coach that has proven capable of going 8-4 / 4-4 in the toughest league and division in the country, and you don’t adjust his pay accordingly to where he is at least making more than the worst coach in the division and conference, its a loud and clear message that you are cheap as hell. And regardless how much you offer on the front end, coaches aren’t going to line up to take a job somewhere if they don’t feel their compensation will be adjusted to the market and their performance.

Joe is under contract. 3 years remain on that contract. That's not cheap. 3 million is not cheap. See what he does in 2019 and give him a 2 year extension if you are sure he's the guy. Is anyone really sure he's the guy at this point? I hope he is, but I'm sure as hell not sure.

Yes it is cheap. It's the market.

Do you understand how scale works? Is a bare bones Ford escort cheap? It's cheap compared to the rest of the market for new cars.

But $15,000 is still a lot of money.

We play in a league of high end luxury cars. Try saying a Ford escort isnt cheap in that crowd

Are you sure Jeremy Pruitt is “the guy” at UT? Making $3.8 million.
What about Will Muschamp at USC? Making $4.2 million.
Chad Morris? $3.5 million.

Until today, Moorhead wasn’t even making $3 million. He was at $2.6-$2.7. And yes, that is absolutely very, very cheap for the market he is in. As is what is he is making now even at $3.2 million. The market is a thing, you can’t ignore it for very long in big time college football.

If you don’t know that he’s the guy, work that into the buyout and list it separately. Has nothing to do with his annual compensation or years on contract if you don’t want it to be that way.

What did we gain? Nothing. If Joe goes 6-6 this year, we just threw away 3.2 million that could have been offered to the next coach.

Goodness gracious. How many times did Dan Mullen finish 6-6? Hell, he finished below it twice.

What are you measuring against? One of our past championship coaches? In order to participate in SEC football, you have to pay your HC over 3 million, and that’s being cheap as hell.

No need to bid against yourself.

Because if you don't extend him after year one in the State of MS then he only has 3 yrs left on contract. If he gets hits his guy and the offense clicks and he wins 10-11 games then that buyout is minuscule with 2 yrs left and very little would be stopping him from taking a bigger named/paying job elsewhere, especially if he thinks State isn't completely behind him. Not extending him would confirm that. He was probably told before he took the job about MS's law and that he'd be taken care of. If we didn't follow through then we'd hafta start all over with possible coaches who know that 8 wins while playing in the SECW may not be enough. Good luck hiring a coach with that. A competent coach is gonna cost you $3 million so why not?

Because the 4 year rule actually helps us as much as it hurts us. Not having to worry about getting stuck with a lemon's contract for 5-6 years allows us to be more competitive annual salary wise. I stated it in another post but what if he gets his guy this year and everything pops and he wins 10 games? With only 2 years left there's basically nothing stopping a bigger richer program from coming and getting him. And if you don't extend him then EVERY state recruit will hear from other coaches "Why don't you give us a look? State doesn't think JoMo is good enough to try and hang on to."

What do you gain when you pay $2.50 for a gallon of gas in your car one week after you paid $2.00 for a gallon the previous week? You gain gas in your car, because that’s the 17ing price. You want to attract, hire, and keep competent coaches, you pay the market price. Moorhead has proven to be a competent coach (even if he’s not yet proven he is a good or great coach). This isn’t rocket science.

As to the second part of your post...WTF? “Throwing away” $3.2 million that could be used for the next coach? Unless you are suggesting that he should have been fired immediately after last season (a preposterous thought) then that’s his salary and what you are saying makes zero sense. We are “throwing it away” / paying it regardless of whether he’s 6-6 or 10-2 or 0-12 or whatever.

Well, the devil is in the details. I would be more curious if the buyout changed. You can extend a contract, but not increase the guaranteed buyout.

Buyouts go down which each year gone off the contract. Hence the term "buyout", you're buying out the rest of the contract, so the less years left on the contract the less to buy out.
