Pope still doesn’t want another assistant

Ehh.. Just win games. Don’t care if he has 567 assistants or zero. Just win.
Yeah, I agree. But honestly, when he doesn’t win games, and if history tells us anything, he won’t win enough, it’s just more fuel he’s adding to the ultimate flame out that’s coming. He’s choosing to add this fuel. It’s weird.

Incoming...Pope with another end of the year comparison with Cal's last four years:

"We finished 6th in the SEC with four guys injured and one less assistant coach, and our winning percentage was still better than the second worse era in Kentucky history during the four years before I came here. We're proud of that. It's beautiful stuff."

That's the thing that's been most surprising/disappointing. I thought he was going to bring innovation and youth to the program. It turns out that he's reflexively stubborn and becomes completely intractable on any issue where the media or fan base has a legitimate criticism. Sucks.
The thing is, he's 54 years old so he's not that young. He's been a HC for 11 years and has never finished above middle of the pack in any conference he's coached in. And this is the guy Mitch thought would lead UK back to glory?

He obviously went after then left the door open for Jamaal Crawford. With that said, surely someone qualified helps more than no one at all. Whether it’s prep work, handling players or recruiting, we’re currently down one for no good reason.
Yeah, I had no issue going after Crawford and even giving him an extended period of time to think on it. But when it was clear he wasn't going to take the job, I have no idea why we didn't pivot to someone else. How many coaches are leaving open spots on their staffs?

Maybe there isn’t really a qualified guy out there who wants to work on a staff that is probably gone after this season? Sure, he could get someone, but how desperate would it look to bring in a nobody? How willing would a top their candidate to come in for a season, traverse through a difficult season where the fan base and media will become toxic, only to be fired in less than a year? What quality candidate would want to give up what they currently have to go through that, when they could just sit tight and get a better gig in the same time frame? Seriously, this could be the issue.

Everything amounts to the sky falling on this board. Who gives a rat’s a$$? He will live or die by his decisions and THIS decision is minor. Coaching staffs have never been bigger. He has enough and if he likes how things are working, let him ride. Geez. This is like living in a panic room with a doomsday cult.

Please show me one post where anyone insinuates the sky is falling? Hush up Beatle.

I'll support him and the team and hope we have an incredible year and be completely open to that possibility, but there are clearly worrying signs and this is probably the year where he has to move towards showing some major signs that he is the right man for the job and our patience will eventually be rewarded if we give him some more time.

Very strange. The only reason I could see is if he is using it as a possible blue chip recruiting tactic to add a family member as a coach for a commitment. He may have to stoop to such a level to get a commitment like that. As said above by BWO, it seems like something that he should fill just for help and to not be used against him if we have another bad year. It is strange.

Why would he choose to not have more help? He’s refused to get a real GM and his recruiting has been terrible because of that. The guy seems like a total control freak who won’t listen to anybody and doesn’t recognize his own weaknesses.
Yeah I don't get it either. It's do or die time and if you can get someone to help so you can focus more on coaching why wouldn't you?

I think he wants to get fired and collect his buyout.
That could be possible, but I just don’t see how a guy who played here and supposedly loves UK would just give up like that. Maybe he’s at his wits end and knows he can’t do it. I haven’t seen that level of quit yet though.

His refusal to delegate has been his biggest weakness so far and will ultimately be what ends his tenure here. He basically trusts one guy amd everyone else on staff is apparently just window dressing.

Hate to tell you but that’s most basketball coaches. Usually only listens to 1 Maybe 2 guys and that’s it.

Interesting. That’s a real inside baseball claim. What facts do you have to back that? Links that will help us understand?

Inside baseball? I think its just obvious if you are paying attention. He had two elite recruiters but tried to close all those recruiting deals. He resisted a gm because he wanted to handle it.

It isn't inside anything.
