Guys I am afraid Jon Sumrall is awakening a sleeping giant at Florida. They stomped Ole Miss 52 to 28 today.

I’d be willing to bet he’s going to get a job equal to or better than GA Tech. Had he stayed at GA Tech, that likelihood would’ve been far less. Think of how many assistants take P4 jobs at a GA Tech type school. Then look at where they came from.
He will get a South Carolina or somewhere like that type job. Same as if he stayed at tech and did good again. He’s a hot name and linked to best coach in college Kirby smart. That means a lot more than anything.

We will have to agree to disagree on that point. IMHO, he's not getting a job like that had he stayed at Tech. Just look at the previous assistants that got P4 HC jobs. They were either coordinators at the school that hired them, or assistants at more successful programs. Why do you think a guy like Klein leaves KState?

The same guy who is head coach at K state now? Wow really moved him up the ladder. Whose coaching tree you are tied too matters almost as much as where you have been. Anybody tied to Kirby will have offers if they succeed somewhere. Same as stein being tied to lanning who was tied to Kirby and Saban. Buster wanted to coach with his buddy for a year or 2 before heading to his own thing. I know some ga tech ppl who have said the same thing. They offered more money too. It was a risky move honestly because if his offense didn’t work in the sec then it would set him back. He would still be at uga if Kirby didn’t offer him co-oc and gave him full control. His family still lives there.

The point is he left KState to have a better resume to return to KState. Last year two P4 HC's were hired that were assistants in their previous job that didn't get hired by the school that employed them. Will Stein and Collin Klein. They came from Oregon and aTm. You could do the same thing nearly every year. I've given you examples. I get it, you don't agree. There is a difference between anecdotal evidence and fact though.

So why did hartline get passed over by all the big schools?

Does it help his resume yes. But would it change how hot a name he is? No. Especially with what stein is doing. What I’m interested in is how long he stays and what sumrall does when he leaves. That will make or break him going forward. We won’t have to worry about offense as long as stein is here. That’s a good thing.

Hell if I know, I wasn't in the room. Can you show me guys that disprove what I said? That would be a good way to try to persuade someone you disagree with. Show them evidence that contradicts what they're saying. Again, all I'm saying is it's easier to get a HC job at a P4 or a quality G5 the better assistant/coordinator job you have. P4 hires of assistants either come from within or programs more successful than their own. If you can show me hires that contradict that, I'm all ears (or eyes, I suppose). I'm sure they exist, I'm just not sure how prevalent it is. Which, again, is why someone would leave the OC post at freaking GA Tech for Florida (I seriously think I'm getting punked).

I just showed you one and you discredited it. Making ga tech offense hard to stop is more impressive than making Floridas. He won’t get a high profile job unless Florida state is desperate and knows they can get him cheap. And that’s a bad job anyways due to no money support.

I think the OC is much of it, dude is gone after this year most likely. But heck what do I know I thought they would lose Golden in basketball and he stayed.

Golden is already a Head Coach; I would assume Faulkner, like every other assistant coach wants a shot a HC position. If they continue to score 50+ ppg, you know people will be looking at him. They are all competitors and want to dominate and I'm sure Faulkner is the same way. Florida has always had talent; it should be almost unforgivable to have a losing season at Florida. Florida had loads of talent at the skill positions offensively; now they have a coach and QB. If Florida can shore up their defense, they could win a natty.

Yes Faulkner is gone the first big job that comes. He left uga where he could’ve been co oc to be full oc at tech. He wants to move as fast as possible from ppl I know around Athens. Good dude though. Kirby was hoping he would stay around like Schuman.

Wait…wut? You showed me a guy who DIDNT get a job. Jesus man. I can’t prove a negative. Assistants that have gotten P4 jobs over the years. Where do they come from? This ain’t rocket science. Me thinks you might know your argument is trash, so rather than have it…you just pivot. Given your opinion, I guess I’m not surprised. Hell dude, I’ll look them up over the last five years and post them. I legit don’t even know beyond this past hiring season. But I have a pretty good hunch.

Tell me I’m wrong Kentucky will be competitive probably more than with stoops but we’re still 15 th of 16 in nil. Georgia lsu Alabama Texas and Florida will still get the majority of the talent in the sec/ country.

You sir are lost. Thinking making Floridas offense good over techs is better for a resume is wild. Tech has way less talent and tech or Florida don’t matter. He’s the hottest OC name around. Was last year as well after stein. He’s a known commodity and just cuz you never heard of him before this year doesn’t mean he wasn’t known. Keep up

Now you’re just making stuff up. Show me where I said I never heard of him. I do agree, it is harder at GA Texh than Florida. I don’t, however, think it’s easier to get a HC job as OC at a school like GA Tech compared to Florida. Which has been the discussion the entire time…until you decided to make it something else. Obviously you’ve done that because history proves me correct.

The school he’s at doesn’t matter. Ga tech isn’t some low g5 school. It’s a school similar to Kentucky. Do good and the opportunities are there. Along with being connected to the best coach in college in kirby and the resume is as good as it gets.

Florida appears to have a good team, but I do think their win over Ole Miss (key word Ole as that’s the kind of defense they play) is being blown out of proportion. The Rebels put everything they had into beating Kiffin. You knew the next week was going to be a massive letdown, especially on the road. So let’s not crown them invincible yet.

Their defense is avg at best and we all know Brad white struggles a few times a year where it seems he forgets how to coach defense.

Florida is just one of those programs that people love to glaze.

You mean to tell me that ole miss laid a dud in their first true road game after the most hyped up game and win in their programs history? Nah. But keep glazing the gators. Let’s see how they look come november

School where he’s at doesn’t matter? Cool story. Research the least 5 years of hiring cycles. Of the assistants that were hired as HC at a P4 school list the school they went to and the school they came from. Then make that same statement.

When you are as hot as name as he was even last year no it doesn’t. You act like ga tech is podunk u. He was oc of the year and was already interviewing for g5 schools 2 years ago.

also look at Garrett Riley. That move don’t always pan out. He set his career way back going to Clemson.

Well would that have not been relevant last year too? UK clearly beat UF in this new NIL/TP arena. Not bashing you but your initial statement could be true as well if you swapped Sumrall’s name with Stein. Let’s see what happens.

Evidently UK didn't either, according to some. He was let go also. So don't downplay the Cat's victories. I never understand "UK fans" downplaying any victories, but here lately on this board it happens a lot, in both BB and FB.

I think it is done to support certain agendas, or to troll, but a fan should never downplay their teams victories.

A lot of ppl on here just seem to love misery and are pessimistic ppl. Unless it’s another team then they are back and the best.

Again, just refusing to use the actual data that exists. Lemme help.

2026...I already listed the two. Stein came from Oregon and Klein came from aTm.
2025...None
2024...Duke hired Manny Diaz from Penn St. Mississippi St hired Jeff Lebby from OU. Duke hired Mike Elcko from aTm. Cuse hired Fran Brown from UGA. Arizona St hired Kenny Dillingham from Oregon. BC hired Bill O'Brien from tOSU/Patriots.
2023...Purdue hired Ryan Walters from Illinois.
2022...Oklahoma hired Venables from Clemson. UVA hired Tony Elliot from Clemson. VA Tech hired Brent Pry from Penn St.

I could have a couple mixed up from the hiring cycle years, but you get the point. Out of those hires, Walters from Illinois to Purdue is about the only one that's a GA Tech comp. All the rest come from rich programs with great success, especially at the time of the hires. What's my point? Same as it always has been. Being a successful OC at Florida gives Faulkner a much better chance at a good head coaching job than does had he stayed at GA Tech. It's hard to imagine someone not understanding that. Places that hire assistants as HCs at the P4/5 level don't hire them from programs on par with themselves. They go pluck them from the better/most successful programs.

You are correct for a guy that needed the added boost. Faulkner didn’t need it. He was the hottest OC name after stein. He just chose to coach with his friend who is close to where his family is. He wouldn’t have left tech for any other spot. He wanted to stay close to his family as long as he could. It’s not like he was putting up huge numbers at western Kentucky

Again, I just showed you a list from the last five years. Ignore it or don't. Anecdotes don't do much for me. History suggests he's going to get a much better job as Florida's OC than had he stayed at Tech.
