If you get your hopes up for Basketball recruiting with Pope at the wheel, that’s on you at this point.
This is it - the issue is that I think his rep has been made at this point and agents/kids are going into meet him knowing it. The UK name/$$ will have just enough clout to make it interesting, so we'll be in there for local kids or transfer who are $$ motivated.

Pope has probably got to target HS kids that are reasonably graded (20-40), be selective and prioritize early. He's not getting into the top 15 sweepstakes with Ark, Duke, AZ, UConn unless there is some clear advantage.

Stop. UK is top 5 in NIL spending. Pope just sucks at this.
Didn’t say they aren’t. Just said those schools are at an advantage. All the rev share can go to basketball with no football. Meaning don’t need boosters to constantly step up as much to cover the difference. Rev share is also guaranteed easy money.

They are at around 15-16 this year. Thats a lot for a school who is going to go after 1 star and the rest role guys. That’s why more and more top guys are going solo to schools or just 2. Top dollar for a star then figure out the rest.

You aren't this guy are you who is not even close on the spending. for any of these teams.

Seems like Stein had plenty of money in his very first year with one of the lowest budgets in SEC football. I would prefer to spend a massive amount on an outstanding coach and have a little bit left over for some decent players.

Didn’t we have the very best roster in the sport for the majority of Calipari’s tenure ?
The right coach is what fixes our problem

Providence’s coach is one to watch for the future. Did well at USF in his one year and won the conference in two seasons at Arkansas State. From Nate Oats coaching tree.

That's absolutely BS. Duke is likely around 30 mil+. They don't have to release financial info. There's a reason they have 10 starting caliber players. Guys aren't sitting the bench just to wear Duke and be a part of the brotherhood. They're getting paid.

You're picking up what I'm putting down! He's the guy. Don't let Tennessee get him.

He aint' staying at PC. He went there because they're fresh in NIL. His wife is a Bama girl, he's from Western NY and passed on the Cuse job.

Anyone that knows anything about Allegeyne County NY should know it's more like Kentucky than NY. I played minor league baseball in Jamestown, NY. That is good ol' hillbilly country and feels more like West Virginia. This dude is a grinder, was orphaned as a child, has a great story and is out to prove something, has a chip on his shoulder.

If you follow his tree deep enough, he started coaching for Oats at Buffalo. Oats was a HS math teacher and basketball coach in the Detroit area. The Hurley's spotted him on a recruiting trip when they were working together at URI, thought he was talented. He starts out as an assistant for Bobby at Buffalo, Bobby crushes it there and then moves on to ASU. Oats moves up to HC at Buffalo and does even better there than Hurley, gets the job at Bama. He brings Hodgson with him.

That's a really good story, look it up online if you want to read more.

This dude effectively comes out of the Hurley tree. Psycho winner. Mesmerizing speaker, knows how to rally. Saw him driving campus passing out pizzas on frat row at PC. He has "it". I want him at Kentucky badly. Part of me doesn't want to move on Pope until this guy is ready. He's a perfect cultural fit, a great story and a winner. And he comes with a plan, and can recruit.

I take him before any other coach right now. I'd take Oats, as another perfect cultural fit, but not sure he leaves Bama. Oats is Detroit guy, but man he feels like a southern boy at this point. Both of these guys run data focused, high pace, high scoring, exciting systems. If you threw UK NIL at either one of them, they could turn it into a juggernaut.

It's ironic now that Hodgson is 45 minutes from Hurley at PC when Hurley is generally the reason he is where he is. Bobby Hurley brought the guy on from a community college in the Buffalo area.

I personally think Danny Hurley is a basketball genius - as in his brain works differently. His identification of talent is startling, and if he's picking Oats out on the HS trail and they're spotting Hodgson, it's enough for me. I'm at a point where I think that Hurley is picking through CBB like Russell Crowe in Beautiful Minds. He's a fascinating follow. I think half his act is intentional. I followed some of the DeMarcus Henry recruitment, which was a wild one. Henry is represented by a big NFL agent and has an entourage lead by PacMan Jones. Henry's entire visit crusade was staged to squeeze $$. They started with Ville to establish market, got the big bag. Then on to UConn, where Hurley connected with the kid and apparently got a verbal from him. He tried to close him on visit like he did Bowman's kid, but was told he wanted to make one more visit to Arkansas. He took the trip to talk to Cal, Cal did his pitch. Hurley then flies his whole staff out to California to meet Henry & Team to close him, camp asks for more NIL and Hurley says f off. In the next couple days, he steals a 5 star out of Carolina that Malone was targeting. That's what you want - a badass ************ representing your program that gets kids for the right reasons.

Take a look at what Nate Oats has done. He picked up a football school BB program that had been essentially a .500 type program with Avery Johnson, got to two tourneys in 13 years. First real year, he's in the S16, third year he has the first overall 1 seed. Fourth year he's in the F4. He's been to an E8 and S16 since. He's working with less NIL and his team always plays hard when it matters.

Screw all the other guys. Lucas could be good, but he doesn't strike me as a Kentucky fit. I could honestly see him waiting out Miami until Scheyer potentially leaves for the NBA. Miami isn't a bad place to be right now.

I sure wish we could spend our “$21M—$23M” like Duke spends their “$14M”.

Seriously. I refuse to believe Duke isn’t outspending everyone by a good amount. They have a projected lotto pick in their 3 deep this year. And their 2nd string would likely be a top 10 team on paper.

We know they have it to spend too. I’d wager, in the form of IOU’s apparently, Louisville outspent most by a good amount too.

Duke isn't spending 6mm on one player like UK, but their entire roster is unquestionably more expensive. None of these twitter guys know what they're talking about.

Let's estimate, conservatively starting by most expensive:

Blackwell - 4mm
Ngongba - 4mm
JBB - 3mm
Boozer - 2.5
Sarr - 2.5
Foster - 2mm
Williams - 2mm
Scharnowski - 2mm
Rippey - 1.5mm
Howard - 1.5mm
Meyer - 500K
Wilkins - 500K

That is a super conservative estimate and 26mm. I have a friend with a daughter that said the rumor is it's 30mm+.
