You can actually see the trail of egress coming from California across the country. ETA, what's up with North Carolina? I didn't know they sucked so bad.

Honestly, in my two visits to LA, I was shocked at how few people honked in that nasty traffic, and I didn't even get a sideways glance going to the Dodgers game in Braves gear. Totally different feel than I expected.

Was in Rhode Island in May for a week. Nicest people I’ve been around as a group in quite a while. Would move there for sure

I hope this doesn't turn into some full fledged politics ****-flinging competition.... but folks, that's a voting lines map. The states who are comfortable importing cultures vs the states who are not.

Anomalies to that statement might be Utah and Minnesota.
I'm not following how it's a voting lines map? Some of the most politically different states are clustered very closely in rankings. At a close glance, it appears there may be some correlation between states that have a higher rates of new-comers and rudeness. That starts falling apart pretty quickly when you consider Texas, Arizona, Nevada, the Carolinas are some of the fastest growing states and Illinois and Ohio are losing people.

Also I'm not sure how you rank something as subjective as "rude". Obviously some things are objectively rude to everyone. However if a new person is quiet and not engaging OR alternatively very loud and asking lots of personal questions, to one person that's a blessing and to another it's extremely off-putting. A car horn can be aggressively rude to one person, another might be glad somebody let them know the light is green.

MS used to be the most charitable state, but then fell down the list a bit after Covid, I think.

I have always thought rudeness goes along with population concentration. When you get in crowded situations and have to stand in line and stay in traffic for everything, you tend to have your patience tested. Becomes easier to become rude. NYC is totally different than Cooperstown in NY.

Yes, there is a certain level of 'coldness' you must develop in urban areas.

However there is another skill that is better developed in rural areas, and that is the art of conversation in general. You see the same people over and over and over, you have to obtain a certain level of social skills to do that.

That same conversation happens amongst groups of people in NY. Those people you see often have the same conversations. The difference is It's harder to break into the group in urban situations where in more rural areas they are more accepting of new folks.
