Went on a trip to New York City in high school. Was with a group of women that insisted on going to Chinatown and shopping for black market purses. We went into secret rooms behind hidden walls at about half a dozen different places. One of the places had these black curtains up with people behind them working on something they clearly didn’t want people to see.

I think I was about about 15 at the time and I was convinced one of the women I was with was going to do or say something stupid and either a) the police were going to storm in at any minute and we’d be getting arrested or b) I was about to become the newest sweat shop employee for the rest of my life.

Mercifully made it out without incident.

Close second would be after the 2014 LSU game we decided to walk to Cafe du Monde for beignets and ended up getting lost on foot in New Orleans at 3 am. Definitely walked down some “I’m about to get stabbed” looking streets at that hour.

3) the north farm traffic stop on a Saturday night after we decided ricks wasn’t up to snuff that night and we wanted to give cowbells a shot…I swear no one exhaled till at least a mile after the cop waived us on

I have put myself through in terrible situations exploring New Orleans before cell phone GPS. I was too young and drunk to realize the danger.

Scary supernatural has to be when we were kids and lived walking distance from back ways into Vicksburg National Military Park. We heard the ghost stories our whole lives and five faces and the graveyard is creepy as shìt at night as a child.

I just remembered this place I lived once. I’d been there for months and had really gotten used to it. It was great. One of those all-inclusive places where everything was provided. You never even had to ask. Perfect temperature, great sounds, and you almost felt weightless.

Then one day, out of nowhere, this enormous blue, rubbery-looking thing grabbed me and started pulling me outside. Next thing I know I’m naked, freezing cold, surrounded by giant beings in a blindingly bright room. I could hardly breathe. Then the beating started. I literally cried.

Absolutely terrifying.

10,000 feet+ on the Gornergrat in Switzerland on a ridge trail. I was about a quarter mile along, with multi hundreds if not thousands of feet of drop on either side, the ridge trail…and I started to be affected pretty heavily by altitude sickness. It was like being drunk, trail was 3 feet wide In spots. That was a scary 10-15 minutes back to the tourist area. In case you are wondering you can take a train, and that’s what we did, to get to that trailhead on the Gornergrat.

1. Passenger seat, ex-wife driving.

2. As a passenger in a two seater vintage, fabric covered frame, airplane flying 200ft over cratered tundra in remote Alaska and the engine backfires and shuts off. Luckily, the pilot, a navy Blackhawk pilot, got the engine started back up quick enough. He was a bit shaken as well.

A Gypsy village north of Augusta,, GA. The man driving the van thought it would be cool to pick up the young girls walking around. A car load of men pulled us over and said if we didn’t leave they would throw bricks and bottles at us.

I lived in New Orleans the summer after Katrina. At that time the city was extremely dangerous after the sun went down probably more than today. It was about 1 AM and I made a wrong turn off Claiborne near Carrollton as there was huge party going on in the street. Let’s just say we did not fit in with this crowd of probably 20 + people. I drove past the crowd and I realized it was a dead end street. When I got turned around, the crowd blocked the street and started walking towards my truck. I woke up the passed out buddy in the back seat and told drunk buddy in the passenger seat “If I say get down I’m taking 6 of them with me” as I put a 4” barrel polished stainless steel revolver on the dash. I didn’t know what their intentions were but I wanted them to know mine. When the street light hit that revolver it shined like a diamond in a cats a**. The crowd parted like the Red Sea and we got the 17 out of there. It took over a year for the three of us in that truck to talk about that night.

That is the only time I’ve ever brandished a firearm and I hope I never have to do it again.

If any of you Memphis guys ever went to the Crying Angel then you know what it's like. My first trip was back in the the late '70s. Late one night an older friend wanted to go find it so I hopped in his 280z and headed out. It's on a dead end road out off Hwy 51 south of Millington. It's fenced in now but back then it was open and in the middle of nowhere. We made it up the trail in the woods and at that time the Angel was still on it's pedestal. After a while it started getting foggy and we decided we had been brave long enough and pretty much ran back to his car. He drove to the end of the road to turn around and as his headlights swept around, we saw 5 white figures moving up and down and coming directly at us in the fog. He gunned that 280z and got stuck in the edge of the field leaving us freaking out and about ready to abandon the car and run. Just as I swung the door open, 5 white faced cows came out of the fog. It was hilarious but about scared the shat out of both of us.

Irish Travelers they were, lad. If you had blue eyes and blonde hair they might have offered you treasure for a wee bit of your DNA.

I get to work in underground mines every so often. Normally I say it's like working outdoors at night. But the walls will pop at times, or have random rocks fall from the roof. I guess the miners are used to it but scares the **** out of me. First time I really experienced it we were on break eating lunch, and the wall I was leaned up against made a crack just like a gunshot. I was ready to get the 17 out of there for the day.

1. Flying to the USA from Japan the airliner developed engine trouble with #4. From my seat near the wing I could see #4 in flames. Not a good feeling. The plane had to detour to Wake Island which had a short runway and we had to take a very short approach over the Pacific and the rocks at the end of the runway.

2. Driving from Lake Tahoe to Reno for a night of fun turned into a nightmare as the rental car's headlines began blinking in the pitch darkness of the mountain highway we were driving. On for 5-10 seconds and off for the same amount of time. We made it to Reno but the wife had to pry my hands off the steering wheel. Not recommended for fun driving.

Came very very close to running out of gas in New Orkeans…. on MLK Boulevard…. with a pregnant wife.
When we rolled into the gas station, we were immediately met by a guy in combat boots trying to wash our windows.

Similarly, years ago I was following a friend down I55 when they almost ran out of gas… in Holmes County… at 10:00 at night.

In the summer of 1990 I walked from West 80th down to the World Trade Center by myself. I was 20 years old and looked like a naive skinny white boy from Mississippi. I walked through all kinds of places that were just fine, and through a few alleys and blocks that I probably shouldn't have. I was never threatened, but I was scared a few times.

Probably the most scared was walking in Tangier with a "guide" who took me through a literal maze of passageways and into some shops and other places. I had no reason not to trust him, but also no real reason to trust him. And I was alone with him with nothing but cash and a cell phone that could not connect to the network there. I'm glad he was an actual working guide who wanted to be paid honestly.

1. Gulf of America on an oil rig in the late 90s. I noticed a bunch of giant bubbles coming up around the starboard side. We had been told to call the driller if we ever saw that. It could be gas escaping and we’d potentially be in for a massive explosion. We did have a leak and they were able to deal with it. We had chaos on deck when I made that call. People went running all over the damn place to get it shut down.

2. Also in the gulf on the way home on a chopper, we flew into a storm that had a large waterspout. The pilots didn’t see it until we were pretty close because the rain was heavy. When they banked sideways to get away from it, I just knew we were going for a drink. It was cool to see a waterspout from the cloud base looking down on it.
