Really surprised there hasn’t been more commentary here about the event. A few things caught my eye.

The new BE Commissioner saying that the league will not follow the P4 football leagues related to eligibility issues. He said the BE will wait until the off season (next Spring) when hopefully things have settled down one way or the other before laying out its approach to eligibility, ie, overseas pros, guys who have signed some level of pro contract, etc. He added that because the BE doesn’t have football, the league has more time to figure things out.

Holloway was really good in his time at the mic and as reported in Daily Dose of Hoops. Zagora had a good article also. He’s confident but recognizes some things still have to be worked out. He likes his big guys and praised Kabba. Maybe there’s more there than we think. He’s really relying on Wilcher, Anderson and Fisher (hopefully) due to their experience in the league.

Danny Hurley— “we wait until guys declare for the portal before we recruit them unlike other coaches who recruit guys into the portal as has happened to Seton Hall.” A bit self serving by Danny but we certainly know who he was referring to in the second part of that quote. Those two really don’t like each other.

The expectation is for at least five teams in the NCAAT with a goal of six.

The commissioner really emphasized monetizing the BE. Private equity? Val was a good administrator which was needed in the early years to get the foundation laid. She did some good things with the early media deal, locking up MSG and getting UCONN back. But this guy seems more focused on what the new environment requires.

Other insights?

(PS: if this seems an odd time to be posting, I’m in Italy for three months.)

Always a good event, haven’t been able to watch much the content other than Sha. Looked like a different format this year with them all taking the podium.

I did see the new commissioner’s speech and we’ll see how he does. At least bleeds BE. Liked the quip that tradition is not a business plan.

Why was it at the Marquis this year and not MSG? They had to schedule it on the date of the Rangers’ home opener? Lol

Lol, I didnt get Hurley's refence till you explained...

I was in Ireland the summer of Amaker's last yr at SH. No smartphones, earlier internet yrs. I had to put in some coins at a hotel to access the net, dialed into that iteration of Pirate Crew. Hey, we got a commit from John Allen, but ugh, Ben Gordan went to Uconn.

I caught a comment from Holloway that I do not agree with. But that said he might have said what he said for the ears of the team.

The offense is ahead of the defense right now, but that's not necessarily a good thing.

I strongly disagree and here's why.

Defense can be taught. If the ingredients are there, size, strength, quickness, athletic ability, depth, defense with time can be implemented.

Not so with offense. If you do not have qualities to play offense teaching them is not only difficult but in some cases impossible.

Opinions?

I thought he said it because he’s a defensive coach. I didn’t think he said it for the ears of the team, but that’s just me.

Sounds like Sha likes the team he has. He doesn't sugarcoat so that's a positive.

The team has some solid pieces but the lack of an alpha scorer or proven PG has me lowers our ceiling. Add to that the increase in spending and influx of talent in the conference and it's going to be more difficult to finish in the top half.

How different would we be feeling about Sha and the program if the NCAA had increased the field a few years earlier? We'd have bids in 2 of the last 3. I think we will be on the bubble again this season and we need to win the big games to punch our ticket. Have to break the drought in Sha's 5th year.

Hurley is full of s--t.I don't believe for a second that Uconn related people didn't reach out to Hines people before the season ended.

Someone pointed out the Hurley quote in another thread. Eye roll on top of eye roll. Know for a FACT Uconn was in contact with Hines people during the beginning part of the BE schedule.

Someone doesn’t like that someone else came in the door immediately and won back to back BE conference and tourney titles, and not at a ready made blue blood like UConn, but a place that has been mediocre for 25 years.

Love that he stated publicly the BE is going to look out for itself. The P-4s look for any opportunity to screw us. Why should we follow them?

There was some Garden conflict - thought it was a concert though - which is why it was held where it was.

Good stuff. Makes sense to wait and be prudent in addressing all of these eligibility issues. Not sure I understand the private equity play because those tend to be sort term plays.

Where are you in Italy?

We were in Sardegna, Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta. We’re settling in for two months in Como. Tried to get tickets to the Nova-ND game but too expensive and complicated working thru an agency called OnSite. Had to go thru them for 2026 Olympic tickets.

That’s a great plan. I think Sardinia is a blue zone mostly because of walking up and down, but beaches look beautiful. Como and Garda on my list:). Enjoy

He didn't necessarily say that the offense looks good - just that it's ahead of the defense.
Yes, the quote is below. But since school has begun he had constantly praised the offense saying it's better than last season's. While noting that the D is behind.

Question of the day is how does a coach get the kids to play better defense? What tools does he have to make this happen? And what if the kids basically are not defense oriented? It's not in their DNA?

We have seen where kids are not offense oriented and coaching them to be better shot makers is also tough to do. Is it the same problem with defense?

Just asking as I see this as a big challenge for any coach.

Playing defense first and foremost is a mindset. It entails hard work and concentration.

But you also need the physical ability to stand out. That means you must be quick and athletic and have interior size and shot blocking ability to protect the interior.

Finally you need depth to both motivate players to play hard (and earn PT) and to keep players fresh on the court.

This team has the potential to be very good on that side of the ball as IMO they possess all the ingredients to play good D.

I remember walking to the courts one day determined to play harder on D. I did, and they asked me "whats up with you, playing D so tough?" You can always play harder, and I think Sha wants to get the kids closer to their limit. Sure, knowledge and athleticism are huge too.

Sha’s also a good defensive coach. Feel pretty comfortable saying that given his body of work across two HC gigs. So there’s that.

Funny thing is, that St Peter’s team shocked the world by playing extremely crisp offense with very good shooting and ball movement.
