Major, commitment for Providence landing the #7 Overall recruit in the country over Kentucky and Baylor. Major shot-blocker at 6'11" 225 with a 7 foot 7 inch wingspan. He's the first 5-Star recruit for Providence in the 20 years of ESPN's ratings.

Along with UConn's 2 top 11 commits gives the Big East 3 of the 4 top committed recruits.

Hodgson is killing it up there from a recruiting standpoint. In fact he’s killing it across the board - fan engagement,
promotion, etc it seems. TBD how it translates on the court, but I’m betting on him being good there in all respects.

He's got next level money behind SJU and UConn. But despite that he knows how to run a program and how to win. I expect they will be at the top of the conference with the other elites for a very long time.

Is the Providence alumni base that much wealthier then SHU? The difference is not obvious to me.Don't see that much of a difference between the two schools.

SHU and the entire BE have to position themselves to be relevant for 2030/31 when most of the big media deals are up and Pitino and UCONN are gone. There is the potential for a lot of musical chairs even for high level non football hoops schools. PC seems to be positioning itself for when that time comes.

Providence is a college town. They do not have the same issues we have here with all the pro teams competing for money and local interest that we have.

For instance, we have one beat writer in Jerry Carino. Imagine if his newspaper folds and he is gone.

That said the Friars do a far better job than we have done promoting their program to their alums and supporters. They now have the perfect coach to continue that trend and their future looks bright.

It's now up to us to do follow their lead and try to both engage the students and our fanbase in this new financial basketball atmosphere.

It won't be easy and hopefully those that read this board will do their fair share. Some can give more, some less. But if we want to continue to enjoy SHU basketball we should try and support our school to the best of our ability.

So the answer is they do a better job.I can buy into that.

I was just going to post something along the same lines as Dan. PC is the primary sports entertainment in Rhode Island. To Dan's point, in our area you're competing with several pro sports teams.

That's somewhat misleading. Providence is closer to Fenway than Dover is to Yankee Stadium. This isn't a Creighton situation.

I think one of the main differences is that many Providence graduates remain in the area after graduation. How many SH grads live in Newark after they graduate?

It’s experience

PC has many many many more years of providing a positive experience for students (who become alums) than SHU..that experience creates a connection which leads to giving

Having said that..they haven’t done a bang up job turning that into out performing us in basketball over the last 20 years but maybe that advantage will be more now

Providence may also may have more alumni whales than the other BE Teams, including SHU. We have an alumni whale but he prefers formula 1 racing as his sport of passion,

Yes. Besides Kurtz We have Mo Vaughn. The drummer for Bruce Springsteen, Max Weinberg, is a grad. How the school doesn’t have Bruce adopt Seton Hall is beyond me. These are people with connections to Seton Hall.
Make an effort to get Bon Jovi who is very into sports. I sont think this school doesn’t a very good job in schmoozing. They may reach out. But they are not closers.

You aren’t wrong with the whole premise, but the reality is we don’t have the type of casual, hop on the band wagon support to lure those types. Unless they are a diehard, they ain’t getting involved in something like Seton Hall basketball. It isn’t like sitting in the first few rows in the Garden watching a hoops team that galvanizes NYC.

Also Bon Jovi was a Giants fan during Parcells and a bit after, and pretty quickly shifted to becoming a Pats fan. Apparently because of his relationship with Kraft and/or Bill B, but you can also read into that what you will.

Several is an understatement. NINE LOCAL PRO FRANCHISES
This is the principal issue. And even some of those professional sports teams are a blip on the radar, ie, the Nets, Devils and Islanders. The big 6 will always attract the most attention. And the only hoops program the NYC market cares about is SJU when they are interesting and good, as evidenced by how Pitino basically transformed them overnight into a program that gets crazy coverage and eyeballs.

That’s not true at all. Their alums live throughout the Northeast, while SHU grads are generally in New Jersey.

And as has been mentioned before, Providence is a separate media market than Boston. Think it doesn’t matter to have four TV stations in town who cover you extensively, or have sports radio in town discuss you as if you are the Knicks? Thats where much of their immediately local interest comes from, not from alums living near Providence.

They also do get more alums to donate, especially having several whales. Makes a big, big difference. In the last 30 years, it’s also become more of a rich kid’s school. This year, tuition and full room and board for a freshman is $88,000, and they are stingy with the financial aid. SHU will always have many more first or second generation students, and that’s admirable. The overall missions of the two schools used to be more similar. Now, not so much.

Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi adopting Seton Hall? Why??????? Too bad Sinatra is dead. They could have gone after him, as well!

9 ny pro teams and a big state school are our problem. Plus, NYC has tons more of everything than Boston.

Bruce doesnt adopt many things. He turned down huge ad money decades ago. I strongly doubt he is getting involved cause Max went here. And if Bruce came to a game, we'd prob boo him cause of his politics lol.

And lets be honest. Repole isnt getting a good turn on his sju money. He does it cause he loves SJ and loves the connection. If that doesnt exist, not sure you have a prospect. Bruce and jbv (both grew up closer to RU) dont have that connection already (and why should they), if they got into us and were seen at games, go after them. If not, imo a waste of time.

Not sure the go to list for felt should be rich and famous nj people with no connection to SHU.

The same place they were before we got good. At home. Hell, this is a SHU fan site and its the most depressing board, with so much negativity. And with few posters.

No one ever thinks the problem is us.

My PC friends never left NJ, in fact, one guy had a few PC pals share a house at the shore and a couple moved here after they graduated.

They gave adopted him. And yes, if he poured tons into us aftervthey build that center, he'd be the biggest jerk ingrate in the world. Firgot about that.
I was being facetious. Bruce gives his money/name to things that resonate to him personally (like any other human). I’ve never seen Bruce have any connection to any sports team or sport itself.

Ludicrous in general for anyone to throw out a name associated with wealth and say “we should go after them”. That’s not how it works.

This board is like any other fan message board….a collection of wide ranging opinions with a touch of social media toxicity.

If a restaurant is underperforming do you think the problem is with the customers?

Often, yes. The problem might be too many other options were your restaurant is located. Many top chefs close restaurants cause the biz is down while the food is still top notch.

And we are a subset of society. Not the general population. I dont know our problem. But I see no reason to eliminate we fans as a part of it. And reading this board of rabid fans doesnt modify that thinking for me.

I do a lot of reading of successful business leaders. Not one complains about the customer for anny failures and in fact are hyper vigilant on making sure they have a unique and positive connection with them.

Alumni, rabid fans, and casual fans all have options on where to spend their time and money. And when those other options are better, I don’t criticize them.

I don’t want to make excuses but back then people only had one 19 inch low resolution TV in the hluse. Many games weren’t on TV. If you wanted to watch sports in general you needed to watch in person.

The casual sports fan can now watch games in 4K on 65”+ TV at home.
