We define “deep” differently.
I learned very little the other night(other than we played like crap) A play here of there goes differently and I have a different impression of some players.

Not saying we are deep. I just dont know.

Depth to me is having 5-6 A or B players and another 5-6 B/C players. Do we have that? IDK yet, but the quality of play reported from the two exhibitions make me question.

If MU is close to our ability, we are in trouble. I dont think it was. If we have 9-10 guys who dont make me groan when they enter a game, that is depth to me...I hope our determining if we have real depth is a process more entertaining than Saturday night

One pattern I have noticed with Sha in terms of recruiting PGs is he keeps trying to replicate St Peter’s when he had multiple ball handlers. His best years he had one PG in Kadary and Budd Clark. Guys that had the ball in their hand the majority of the time, could score, and make other guys better. The problem was when they struggled that usually meant a loss but we still had great success overall. During the 24-25 season he tried to get multiple handlers in Garwey, Zion, Chaunce, Dylan but obviously that didn’t work out and he is trying to do the same thing again and we are seeing similar results. He has to stop trying to get multiple guards and create competition. We don’t need a PG battle between Jones, Parker, Petrovic, Roddie. I would have kept Petrovic and combine what we I payed Roddie, Jones, Parker to get an elite PG. extra spots can go to some JUCO/D2 guys as practice players.

I would think he realizes this by now? The talent you need to run that at the BE vs MAAC is not in our budget anyway even if it was plausible to be effective with it.

Both Richmond and Clark were All-BE too. He tried keeping them.

This. Too much redundancy and no real PG's aside from Petrovic who is unproven.

Most important positions are 1 and 5. The priority always should be overspending on those positions and then let the rest figure itself out. Id be a lot more happy with a few so-so type players who are serviceable BE players but not stars if we had a legit PG and a legit C.

Not that Copeland isn't "legit" (he was very solid on Sat) but he's 6'7. In the BE, thats a 3 or a 4. Instead we probably overspent on a 6'10 supposed PF who couldn't block a shot or get a rebound in 14 minutes against what should be a paltry opponent.

Agree he falls too much in love with underdog stories. Yes by nature of our budget we need to have some underdogs, but he needs a core of 3 guys with high major or at least come from a strong mid major program who can compete right away until the rest of the team gels

I'm not taking much stock in an exhibition, but do people still believe we are a middle of the pack big east team?

Again it's just exhibition but a double digit loss to BC and a 3 point win vs Monmouth does nothing to excite the fan base or make people want to come out to games.

A bigger problem may be the style of play is not going to excite the fan base either. Hopefully that changes soon.
It’s ugly basketball. Sure, there’s something to be said for watching good defense but the offense is playground at best. There’s no shooting ever, the best offense is driving and creating or getting to the FT line. You’re not going to get good looking offense, even outside average shooting from this coach barring a seismic shift and he’s stubborn.

But really, just win. Did anyone care last year when we were ranked and making some noise? No, it was about winning. There was juice.

Well if the "secret scrimmage" and exhibition against Monmouth are any indication, we don't have to worry about handwringing over having 15 players. At least 5 of them shouldn't ever see the floor ever.

The season probably comes down to how quickly Jones can become an average PG. Or if maybe Parker can handle it.
If trey is our pg we are in trouble

If this group gets 2 ooc wins against high major opponents and gets 8 to 12 conf wins they hit their median abilities

I think we'd need to fill their ice baths with Lourdes water for the next two weeks to get a miracle like that. Based on what we saw against Monmouth, we seem to be looking at a year similar to the 2024-2025 season. It's a $10 million team--but nothing to write home about.

I’m sticking with my 9-11 BE record as it’s still too early, but it’s looking more like a ceiling versus a floor right now.

Not enough
Completely agree here. He has to be among the key players getting major minutes. Probably our best 3-point shooter who also has a good BB IQ. His lob to Williams was excellent. One of the more talented players on the squad.

Ditto for Kareem Thomas. Nursing a tweaked hamstring or something and still had a good baseline move for a dunk. Thomas needs to play a good amount as he also among the top 3-point shooters.

Curious how we show up for VCU exhibition. Anyone know when that is?

Yes, but Simpkins and Mike Williams were pretty good creators. Simpkins got $1.5 million at Mississippi State and Budd Clark $2.8 million from Ole Miss. Not sure about Mike, but Simpkins and Budd were highly valued in the marketplace.

We have never done well with PG by committee, so let's hope someone emerges and two creators alongside the lead.

Isn’t that what Payday is for?? Barely got off the bench. Will be the same for Tyndale next year if he keeps his commitment
Payday is more of an undersized 2 or a combo at best. And no, Tyndale would see time on this years team much less next years. Another difference is Payday's natural position is our most crowded spot, whereas PG is our biggest need.

I would have gladly paid Simpkins 1.5 million. Should not have even been a question.

Would you rather have Simpsons or Wilcher? Obviously time will tell but I don’t think you were getting both if your giving Simpkins 1.5.
Simpkins no brainer. I love Sim but his confidence is shot. He is going into his senior after significantly regressing. Simpkins has continually gotten better. His 3pt shot tailed off towards the end of conference player but he was still a decent player who knows Shams system. I can’t see how you don’t match whatever he is offered

Payday is another in our long list of mediocre to average SG/CGs. He has some talent but not much different than veterans in front of him so he won't play a lot. He could develop into a useful player but he's not the type to crack a 7-8 man rotation as a Frosh with a ton of similar veteran players.

Tyndale is a true PG with unique skills. He has all the attributes of a distributor with lightning quickness and an ideal fit for Sha. Plus he's an ascending consensus top player ranked from #48 to #74 while Payday was generally descending with a wide range of rankings outside of the top 100, generally in the 120 to 175 range.

I like what I see from Wilcher so far. Too soon for me to decide. Was a big fan of Simpkins too. The way Wilcher finished the other night seemed to me him showing Sha he is ready to take over.

Wilcher has tools. Always has hence why he was going to UNC out of HS. From afar, the mistake he made was chasing a bag and running from competition at SJU last year. I never understood why he left unless the money was that much more, and chalked it up to his family having a relationship with Sean Miller through his brother who played for Miller. Well he ran into competition at Texas too - which he should have known would be the case - and took a step back.

Wilcher started 75% of the time and averaged over 25 minutes per game for a team that dominated the Big East and won 30+ games. He has ample and unlimited runway here given the rest of the roster. The environment lends itself for him to put last year behind him and breakout as a senior, which we’ve seen plenty of times. Hopefully Sha isn’t micro-managing his every dribble and giving him the ultimate green light to see what the guy can do, because that would be justified given who else comprises our backcourt.

You’re also assuming Simpkins wanted to return for another year of Sha. Our most productive players who have options haven’t exactly wanted to do that in this era of player movement.

It came down to money with Simpkins. He wanted much more than what Holloway thought he deserved. Especially due to his play in the Big East,

I really liked Simpkins early on. Gave the team a lot of positives but then he slid backwards in BE play like you said. The skeptical part of me in the new NIL order makes me think he may have had another deal lined up already and took his foot off of gas.

I agree his play slipped during Big East player but you do have to wonder when Holloway is going to give a player what they ask for. I have to give it to him that he was absolutely correct in not paying Coleman, but let’s see how Simpkin’s season goes

Clark was a stud last season for the Hall. To deny that IMO is foolish. But we offered him $2.5M (his ask to stay) and he decided to leave. I do not blame the school in any way for that.

Those of you who questioned the importance of Budd Clark is about to witness a year without a great point guard. And it won’t be pretty.
What you say may be true but even with Budd this team was at the bottom of the BE in many offense categories. So the low scoring offense so far is a repeat of last year and on a very positive note Sha showed us he can win many games even if they struggle to score 20-25 in the first half. Let's catch our collective breaths and see how the real games that matter play out.

Clark is gone. We can certainly appreciate him though for what he did for the team that will be difficult to replace. He was a given from day one and grew into the role Sha needed. He also was a huge hedge with his ball handling. He did have two many lapses where he dribbled the ball off his foot, but that was offset Ann Ha’o. He was able to break the press and maintain control of the offense, especially at the end of games. You could see how he was frustrating the other team and was able to control the tempo.

Two biggest factors:
- Can the PG by committee handle pressure and avoid turnovers?
Without a clear choice as starting PG and rotation, that’s a big concern for continuity of offense.
