Clark was a stud last season for the Hall. To deny that IMO is foolish. But we offered him $2.5M (his ask to stay) and he decided to leave. I do not blame the school in any way for that.
Offered 2.5 for a PG who can't score at 3 levels of half court

Clark is gone. We can certainly appreciate him though for what he did for the team that will be difficult to replace. He was a given from day one and grew into the role Sha needed. He also was a huge hedge with his ball handling. He did have two many lapses where he dribbled the ball off his foot, but that was offset Ann Ha’o. He was able to break the press and maintain control of the offense, especially at the end of games. You could see how he was frustrating the other team and was able to control the tempo.

Two biggest factors:
- Can the PG by committee handle pressure and avoid turnovers?
Without a clear choice as starting PG and rotation, that’s a big concern for continuity of offense.
The PG by committee stuff only works when you can run an offense that decentralizes it. That means motion and spacing. Holloway has never done that here. In fact, they’ve been woefully turnover prone and downright against outside shooting.

We had 21 turnovers at Monmouth. I mean…. What a joke.

I don’t blame the school for eventually walking away from negotiations with Clark, but, to not have a backup plan in place? How does the program allegedly spend 10 million and not having a starting PG?

Budd would have cost almost 33% of our budget. I agree id like to keep talent but if u dont have the money what can u do. That means less for bigs and less for shooters we desperately need. If our shooting sucks and our big men suck then people would complain why we cant pay for shooters or bigs. Either get more money or shrink the roster big time.

Simpkins was good early on but once the other BE coaches had film on him, he wasn't nearly the same player. You could also tell he didn't respond well to negative reinforcement. Budd on the other hand thrived in Sha's system.

I would have ponied up & paid him.

I’m thinking with Sha’s system it’s better to pay whatever you need to pay to get a legit PG, next should be a capable defensive center with height, and after that let the pieces fall where they may.

Overspending on 2,3,4 with no PG is sort of pointless unless your running an offense that spreads the floor, passes well, and is flush with shooters - all of the things we never do.

This. If Budd wanted to go for highest bid that's fine, but how do you justify not paying any PG even $1M with a $10M budget? PG is like QB in football, very difficult to win without a competent one.

Sha's system does not get players open, it requires a competent PG to be able to breakdown the defense, penetrate and find the open man when the help comes.

I’m sure there’s been instances, but I can’t think of any PG by committee teams that worked and got a team to the dance. Plus, all of the players that would have PG responsibility on the roster all have vastly different styles.

somebody has to take the reins and run the team for at least 30 MPG’s. I haven’t seen the team play, but the limited information tells me that doesn’t exist.

Feel like Uconn kind of did this two years ago when Aiden Mahaney turned out to be a portal bust. Instead of him taking the lead guard reigns backed up by Diarra and even the touted freshman Nowell, they went with a committee approach (led by Diarra).

And last year SJU did this when they didn’t land any of the portal PG targets. Darling was a defensive menace and metrics darling but certainly not the type of PG you see on a Sweet 16 or better team. They tried using Jackson there but it didn’t really work. Ultimately the pivot was developing Mitchell and Zuby into guys they could run the offense through as playmakers.

Those are two recent examples.
