That's somewhat misleading. Providence is closer to Fenway than Dover is to Yankee Stadium. This isn't a Creighton situation.
I think one of the main differences is that many Providence graduates remain in the area after graduation. How many SH grads live in Newark after they graduate?
That’s not true at all. Their alums live throughout the Northeast, while SHU grads are generally in New Jersey.
And as has been mentioned before, Providence is a separate media market than Boston. Think it doesn’t matter to have four TV stations in town who cover you extensively, or have sports radio in town discuss you as if you are the Knicks? Thats where much of their immediately local interest comes from, not from alums living near Providence.
They also do get more alums to donate, especially having several whales. Makes a big, big difference. In the last 30 years, it’s also become more of a rich kid’s school. This year, tuition and full room and board for a freshman is $88,000, and they are stingy with the financial aid. SHU will always have many more first or second generation students, and that’s admirable. The overall missions of the two schools used to be more similar. Now, not so much.
