It's a cumulative thing, but I'm seeing so much negativity around Davis online and at the matches lately, which I just don't get. Not accusing anyone here specifically, but in an effort to put some respect on Braeden's name (Desmond is going to have a great career too!), here's the complete list of who he's lost to in his career.
  • Jesse Mendez 2x National Champion
  • Lucas Byrd National Champion
  • Richard Figueroa National Champion
  • Drake Ayala 2x National Finalist
  • Brock Hardy National Finalist
  • Ryan Crookham AA (3rd)
  • Zan Fugitt AA (4th)
  • Nasir Bailey AA (4th)
  • Caleb Smith AA (6th)
  • Jacob Van Dee AA (7th)
  • Dylan Shawver AA (7th)
  • Jore Volk AA (7th)
  • Nic Bouzakis 2x Bloodround, and much more expected this year...
Note: he's also beaten Bailey, Bouzakis, Shawver, and Van Dee, as well as AAs Eric Barnett, Patrick McKee, Michael DeAugustino, Evan Frost, Connor McGonagle, and Brandon Kaylor.

No, he's not a threat to Cael, or any number of the kids setting a ridiculous standard at Penn State these days. But's he's one tough SOB and one of my favorites on the team (at least when he can keep his cool after gettin stuck).
Absolutely love this defense of Davis, our scrappy junk yard dog.
Not sure who, of sound mind, would choose the other side of a 3C decision.

Pyles is wrong. To make the assumption Pyles has a point is to also make the assumption Pyles' knowledge of the Davis v Desmond situation is comparable to Cael's. It is assuming Pyles has first hand knowledge of room competitions, whether there has been a wrestle off or two and that Pyles has an equivalent of Cael's data interpretation.

Pyles doesn't know anything more than most on this board, and he has no idea what Cael's plan is.
Pyles has an opinion based on watching a few matches. To think he has an opinion equal to Cael's, is way more than a little wrong.
I dunno.
How many times have we heard Cael say he doesnt know this, or doesnt remember that, or wasnt aware of something that occurred during a match.
I am beginning to wonder if the other coaches arent the real brains of the outfit, and they just send Cael out there to speak to the press because he is so comfortable as a public speaker.

Seems like some pick on one of our guys every year, Scooters turn this year! Deserve it, I don't think so.

I think you need to evolve your thinking to the next level or two on this one.

I think the focus with Davis seems to be about how he loses. Granted this number is small as well. There are just some matches where he doesn't appear competitive.

I think Davis will be fine moving forward. He isn't going to be a hammer, but he will win more than he loses. I don't think he loses to many outside of the top 5 at 141.

Aside from the Mendez match, when do you think Scooter has looked uncompetitive?

I am not just talking this year but, Van Dee, Byrd, Bouzakis, and Hardy. You could argue Hardy because he came out fast, but it became pretty clear that Hardy had him. Again, there are not a lot of cases. There are some guys that just stun you when they give up a take down. Davis just isn't one of those guys. As others have pointed out, he is very good.

Without wanting to get into an argument, I want to point out that he’s 1-1 vs Van Dee, winning their most recent match (at NCAAs), 1-1 vs Bouzakis, and he led Hardy in the 3rd period.

I like Davis and I am not arguing these as true facts just as a reason why many are down on him.

Had the pleasure of meeting Sergio twice. He seems a prototype for who you want representing your program.
Amatarro, you are one blessed man to be able to hit all of these meets with your lovely children in tow. P.S., I am envious of you seeing all these duals in person. I have seen only one Penn State dual, and that was ASU. Need I say anymore? : )

just what people are thinking,Davis has to do his own thing and if he was around 160 when he knows that wont work he has to stay close to weight and be ready when its time and if he is practicing every day there is no reason for him not to be in shape!I like the kid hope he does well!

It’s Cael speak, he never wants to act like he is the reason for their success, he goes out of his way to act like a dunce, while giving his staff all the credit.
Cael is the Keyser Soze of the wrestling world.

While Cael is not as mentally AWOL as he would sometimes have you believe, Casey Cunningham is most definitely the brains of the operation.

Rumor has it that;

Cael is going to hold a best of 3 wrestle off, 2 days before Princeton,

Desmond v Scooter

Cole v Cochran

The winners start against Princeton.

The match will be open to the public, Cael's cookies will be sold at the event.
Rumor has it

Hate to say it but no one on the Penn State roster at 141 is beating Mendez this year. Only person to figure him out is not on the roster this year..Bartlett. Even then Mendez was able to turn that around. Cael wont burn a RS just for a couple points at nationals.

No one is burning a RS at this point. The startling part of this whole discussion is that no one considers the possibility that they did have a wrestle off six weeks ago to determine who would burn the shirt and Davis won. Everyone just assumes Desmond would win. Why?

When Nagao was officially ruled out was the time to determine what is best for the rest of the season, and that determination was made and it was Davis. Couldn’t a competition between the two have been part of that? There’s really no reason to redshirt either one if they’re actually the best option for this season because neither one has a guaranteed spot in this lineup going forward.

Far too many people are acting like it is next season already with multiple options on the table. It's February my friends, Braden is by far the best option all things considered, health, RPI, match count, seed at both bigs and Nationals...

Mendez is just that good, and Braden got caught in the prior match.

I think it's highly highly likely he AAs, more likely than any other option. Really! Any alternative could see Mendez early in the bracket at both Bigs and Nationals if we even get that far.

Ono is other worldly and Desmond is looking like one of the next greats, but honestly throwing either in unseeded? Lunacy

Not quite the same, but in 2011 Quentin Wright lost his last 2 duals by MD to Steinhaus and fall to Rutt.

He didn't lose again that year.
One of my all-time favorite runs. #8 seed at B1G and #9 seed at NCAA's after a tough, injury-plagued season. Quentin got it done and was one of the key reasons we won our first NCAA championship since 1953. He is an all-time great.

Des may have to wait a few yrs to start!
Or maybe the plan was for Marcus to go this year then take a redshirt ala Kasak. Gives Marcus an extra year to get better and allows Desmond to go 141. If Ono doesn't get a second year Luke, Marcus and Nate ... Not sure who would be 33 or 41 but no portals that way.

I can't believe this was almost 15 years ago! How time flies during a dynastic run : ) This photo is also my avatar on here:
