Why do you want a coach that didn't make the tournament out of the ACC? We want the coach that was first in the ACC. I really don't get y'all.
1. It's not his fault. The entire series at Florida State was canceled, and even if they win just 1/3, their RPI improves enough that they probably make it in. Or even if they get swept they may nudge the RPI enough to make it, since they just barely missed.
2. They went 16-11 in the ACC. A record like that in the ACC has never missed a Regional in the 64-team era, but the ACC's reputation isn't quite what it once was.
3. Their RPI was really bad due to a soft non-conference schedule. Presumably not his fault, unless he was scheduling the games personally. His AD really let him down.
4. Even if all of the above weren't true, he still has had a hell of a career at UVA (7 trips to Omaha including a title). Baseball is a weird game and sometimes you just have a down year when the sample size is so small.
Anyway, the coach who "was first in the ACC" this year is retiring, so that's a no-go. O'Connor is clearly the best coach in the ACC over the last 20 with no sign of slowing down.
