That was fun season. RU was incredibly athletic on defense that year. Alexander, Wagner, Toran, Grey, Mangiero were a remarkably quick DL. There was a lot to talk about with the team, but the DL really stood out for me.
“Rutgers Has Its Day After a Good Night” was the November 27, 1976 New York Times headline proclaiming, “Governor (Brendan) Bryne declared today “Hooray for Rutgers Day” to celebrate the University’s 11-0 season football record.”
The 11-0 1976 team was invited to play McNeese State in the inaugural Independence Bowl. The team declined the invitation three days before its final game on Thanksgiving night hoping for a Peach or Tangerine Bowl bid that never came.
