We gave UNO hell and they weren’t very happy about it. Good times.I was at that regional
State lost to New Orleans
Murray State beat Tulane and then beat New Orleans in the winner’s bracket
State beat Tulane, New Orleans, and then Murray State twice to win it
Looks like that document was completed using an IBM Selectric.this was the last time Murray State got this close to going to OMAHA. Who remembers the outfielder getting beer dumped on him by two loungers and then getting an umbrella tossed to him on the way back in to the dug out. 18-8 victory. Some kid named Castoria got to play. View attachment 815802
Maybe Coach Polk typed it himself after the gameLooks like that document was completed using an IBM Selectric.

I’m old so I may remember wrong but I was thinking that the umbrella thing happened with a Tulane player. Could be wrong though. Whoever it was, it was thrown at him like a spear. The ground was soft from rain and it stuck up in the turf and then the player grabbed it it and attempted to sling it back into the stands behind first base but right after the guy threw it the thing popped open and didn’t go 10 feet. It was hilarious. My wife and I went to all the games and always sat behind the first base dugout, usually on the top row. Those were some of the best times of our lives. Great memories.

Yep, that was my time at MSU. No walls, just a chain-link fence. Visiting outfielders knew they were gonna get an earful all game long and get drenched with beer if they got too close. But they also knew we'd treat them good after the game. That was also the first time I heard someone say that we were going to 4 lane Tulane. Our fans were a hard core hoot. Some of them could come up with the funniest stuff.
Obviously remember Bruce, but also remember Roark McDonald. He was a pretty damn good catcher as I recall.this was the last time Murray State got this close to going to OMAHA. Before Roark, we had a super catcher named John McDonald. I don’t remember if they were brothers or what. So many really fine players. Before Bruce played first we had Tim Wheishime (sp). They called him Combat. Mike Kelly in center, Pete White at second, Steve DeErocle (sp) at short, one of my favorites was a guy that played third but I’m having a senior moment with his name. It might come to me later. The list goes on and on. So many really good players. I started watching State baseball in 1966. That was the year that Dudy Noble was built in its current location. They played in Columbus that year in Red Bird Park. That was 2 blocks from my elementary school so I would walk over after school and got to be friends with some of the players. I sat on the scoreboard and hung the runs on the nails each half inning. They gave me some bats (wood) , plus gloves and other stuff. Thought I was in heaven. I was in the fourth grade.Obviously remember Bruce, but also remember Roark McDonald. He was a pretty damn good catcher as I recall.

Not Lou, I thought about it and I think his name was Mike Martin. Sux to get old….. also, who could forget the fantastic catches Dan Van Cleve used to make in center. Another really fine Bulldog.Lou Soltille?

Wild that he got a field named after him at Florida StateAre you thinking of the Mike Martin who pitched for State in the late 80s?
We had a couple classes together. Good guy.
Hey Bruce, what was the Mississippi State player's take on how we treated the opponents outfielders? And what about the fact a lot of fans in LFL would splash them with beers if they got too close to the fence?Y'all are all over the place. In 79 which this game was was my freshman year. Polkie got down on me at the end of the year and mostly played the senior Pete Torres through the regionals and WS. He and I mostly platooned at third through most of the season. Not sure why I show in that box score to just play defense.
Pete White redshirted that year and started playing in 80. Derc and Lou Sotile were 80 and 81. John MacDonald was the catcher as a junior in 79 and was from NJ. Roark McDonald first year was 82 he was a Southern boy and is not related to John. Same with Van Cleve 82
No, I guess the name still escapes me. The 3rd baseman I am trying to remember played in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It will probably come to me about 3:00 in the morning one of these days. This senior moment **** is real. Are you thinking of the Mike Martin who pitched for State in the late 80s?

It was fine with us. On warm days you could tell who the outfielders were when you shook hands after the game by the smell.Hey Bruce, what was the Mississippi State player's take on how we treated the opponents outfielders? Moved to 1B 80-82Where did you play after you and Torres played 3b in '79?
Hopefully that wasn't too difficult of a transition for you. I don't necessarily think it would have been, but it's a totally different animal for sure.Moved to 1B 80-82
