Bizarre.

Talk about your strange product placement with the obligatory pull from the Coke bottle at the beginning and the studio host awkwardly pouring a bag of Golden Flake chips into a snack bowl... I can't imagine Saban participating in something something like that today.

You could tell that Bryant was getting tired at this stage of his career. The man definitely had a commanding presence. He gave Emory Bellard a lot of credit and was very complimentary of the Dawgs, didn't offer any excuses other than second guessing his decision to put the starters back in the game. Anyway, I had heard Jack's call of the final 2 minutes of the game but stuff like this is why I love Youtube.

A couple of things I noticed

1. He was clearly not happy with his team having fun on the bus ride over to the game.

2. He mentioned the crowd noise (cowbells?) and kind of insinuated that was part of the reason why they lost.

3. No doubt the Bear knows football, but there is also no doubt he didn't know math.

1980 Bama...#1 team in the nation....four fumbles...four 15 yard penalties....pretty good MSU team...**** happens...hope this year's team realizes that.

We can win this thing Saturday night...if we do, we are smack dab in the middle of the NC talk.

From the Sports Illustrated Article on the game:

I always thought this was a great move by Bear. He visited the MSU locker room after the game:

Last Saturday afternoon, when Alabama Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant walked into the dressing room full of hysterical-beyond-bonkers football players to say a few words, the place fell instantly silent. Bryant didn't ask for it; his presence demanded it. After all, The Legend was paying a call. "You are deserving of more than you got today," said the always soft-spoken Bryant. "You should have won by more."

These were ordinary words, something any coach might say to his players—except that Bear was standing in the Mississippi State University dressing room talking not to his boys but to the team that had just beaten his boys.

Yes, Mississippi State. The Bulldogs had defeated the seemingly invincible and No. l-ranked Crimson Tide before 50,891 spectators in Mississippi Memorial Stadium at Jackson. It was the largest college football crowd ever in Mississippi. Alabama hadn't been beaten since Sept. 23, 1978, when Southern California did it. The Tide had won 28 straight games, the longest streak in the nation. It was the first time in 22 years that Mississippi State had whipped 'Bama. Indeed, only three members of the State team were even alive when the last State victory over the Tide occurred.

I have the entire game on VHS. It was obvious that the ground could cause a fumble in those days. Also, didn't seem to matter if your knee was down or not. Plus we ran the ball 80% of the time.
