Thanks gladiators01 for working on the ratings and current playoff brackets (always fun to see what it could look like and does at the moment).

I, for one, would love to see that 2nd round matchup between Essex and Altavista (after watching the last two losses against Altavista in Salem and those same Colonels knock many of those same Essex boys out in the B-Ball tourney. Maybe a little different outcome this season...maybe.

I responded in the Top Ten thread below to the debate about Riverheads being the #1 team and the possible (I would say probable) meeting between Riverheads and Essex this season.

Hmmm...now if Riverheads goes 10-0 and Essex 9-1, does Riverheads get the all important top East seed?

Cause that would force Essex to travel way out West (if they make it, of course) to take on a good West Region top team and way more importantly, have to play them in their environment .....? too many unknowns there, and not really good ones for Essex, I would say.....

The loss to JM might be too much to overcome this year for Essex to get top seed like last year. Not sure how it will play out. Interesting.....Thoughts?

At this juncture, it appears Essex will need to win out and hope that Riverheads loses at least once to grab that number one seed. Riverheads plays 3 2A's in its final 4 games while Essex plays just 1 2A. That's four additional points sitting out there for Riverheads which is presently 11 points in front of Essex (150-139)

It's going to be close. Essex's opponents will have a lot more wins than what is left on Riverheads schedule. Riverheads probably still gets it but it will come down to a few bonus points.

The points will definitely be close. Having said that, no one out west will want to see this years version of Essex. When they played JM, it was 14-7 I think with about 20 seconds till half, and JM scored on a 4th and about 20. JM will probably win the 3A title. Those who were at the game likely witnessed 2 title teams playing each other. If you havn't seen JM play, they are likely capable of beating Phoebus, and we might just find out.

Thanks for the responses NNDman, dringtuoti, and 2x4.

Yea, it was 7-6 in the 2nd, Essex was in it despite W&L's D.J. Weldon scoring two TDs in 1st half until the 4th and long play right before half. Then if fell apart being, game was away at tough JM and after unusual long layover.

I know what you are saying about who is the best on paper. I would be more concerned about the many variables that are harder to control on a trip like that.

Many worry only about the x and o's when its the other variables that are often the difference between victory and defeat (if teams are within a certain talent range). Just my opinion.

It really doesn't matter too much as there isn't any juggernaut in the west that you are trying to avoid.

I predicted before the season that Riverheads was going to win state. They are really looking good now that they dropped down to 1A this year. They was holding their own in 2A for years.

No doubt RH is a threat, but they lost to KW in the 2A playoffs last year, and Essex beat KW by 40 or so last year. . I've seen Essex play 3 times this year, and they are a better all around team this year.

Good observation! Appomattox always participates in their preseason jamboree. This was the first yr we actually went toe to toe with them. They are a bit smaller this yr in comparison to recent yrs though.
