1a State Championship Predictions

Can North Duplin improve and come out of the east again? What about Washington County can they get their act together and start a new dynasty? Or will it be Pamlico, Northampton County, or Gates county or Rosewood if they drop?

Out In the west will it be Murphy or Mitchell who seem to be the two heavy favorites or are the undefeated Gryphons for real and they represent? What about Robbinsville? Cherokee? Someone else?

From what I’ve seen Pamlico or Northampton out of the East.

If Murphy doesn't win it, Mitchell will. No other teams at their level in small 1a, with the exception of someone playing above their potential and knocking one of them off. It's possible I suppose

You aren’t fooling anyone BK. I’ve seen what Robbinsville has coming up through the pipeline in youth football, and y’all always have excellent JV football. There is more than enough talent over there to make Robbinsville a contender for years to come. Y’all will probably be the favorites next year, and this year is far from over too. A school with the football success and tradition of Robbinsville doesn’t need to be worried about anyone’s numbers except for their own.

Man when its 44 missing from last year according to NCDPI, I mean come on. Sorry, and I have nothing at all against Murphy and love seeing them play, but you have to admit this is a bit strange. Maybe all these kids left the Murphy school system, transferred, dropped out. I don't know. I do know it 100% appears that Murphy, Gentry and the higher ups did all they could to duck the big boys of 1AA, especially Tarboro.

Gentry has played and beaten plenty of teams over the years at Murphy as good or better than Tarboro..

I don't agree with that, Tarboro is probably better than any team Murphy has ever beat besides '02 Asheville. The only team(s) Murphy has even played that you could say are definitely better than Tarboro are the '06 and '07 Chattahoochee teams. The '05 Thomasville team is probably the closest comparable that Murphy has played to this Tarboro team. You could make a solid argument that they were better than Tarboro is now though.

Pretty decent list. I dont think '86 Hendersonville was a better win, yeah they had Sam Gash but they had two losses prior to playing Murphy. The '87 Swain win is possible I guess, they were undefeated and did have a sophomore Heath Shuler. I guess you could make an argument for the '11 Albemarle win. I dont think the '09 undefeated Albemarle team was better than this Tarboro team but them and the 2010 undefeated Wallace Rose Hill team Murphy played are probably in the same ballpark at least. I think the '05 Thomasville team was better than Tarboro if you just look at the sheer level of high end talent on their team.

And most people dont know that Murphy played that game against Thomasville in '05 with several major players sick with the flu. Not that it would've changed the outcome at all but it might not have been the bloodbath that it ended up being.

The '94 North Edgecombe team that beat Murphy was good but not one of the best teams Murphy has played. The '96 North Edgecombe team Murphy beat was very good, better than their '94 team. The '97 North Edgecombe team that beat Rosman was great.

I think Coach Gentry said that was his most disappointing loss, or something to that effect.

It’s really crazy how close Murphy is to having a few more titles. One point loss to North Edgecombe in 1994. One point loss to WRH in 2010 after dominating the first half and leading 18-7. 20-15 loss to Plymouth in 2012 after refs made horrible call (fumble out of the end zone) at the goal line as Murphy was going in for the game clinching score. Posey’s knees were clearly down. It was 15-14 and it would have been 1st and goal on the one or two yard line with a couple of minutes left. Instead, Plymouth got the ball and drove 80 yards for the winning score. Also, from a talent and experience standpoint, the 2001, 2008, and 2017 teams were some of the best teams Murphy had to NOT win the title. Oh and 1992 was pretty good too but that team couldn’t go to the playoffs.

When you play in as many title games as Murphy has you're bound to lose a few. The team I reminisce on the most is the '01 team and what could have been. With a healthy Kent, with McKeon and Colbert playing and Hetzel and Allen not transferring that's one of the best teams Murphy has put on the field.

State title games are never easy. I dont think it would be an easy game for Murphy if those two met up. But what I will say is Murphy has a stout run defense and a team that runs the ball as much as Pamlico plays to Murphy's strengths.

I've seen Pisgah twice this season. They are jor that good. They will get exposed in a few weeks

I don't think they're some juggernaut, but they do have a solid team and a good run defense. Their lack of offense and team speed will hurt them and be their undoing against Shelby, but it's not like any other mountain team could beat Shelby besides Reynolds.

Bro great post, mitchell is awesome football team. They can beat Murphy and it's in ledger. I see this game as low scoring , Mitchell has advantage in special teams. Biggest problem for mitchell in this matchup their strength is Murphy strength. Plus Murphy has gentry I still cant make a pick on this game.

mbdfan interesting you mentioned north edgcombe beating Rosman. If my memory serves me correctly Rosman came out of the SMC as possibly a 3 seed to play for the championship that year. So it’s pretty safe to say never take a SMC team lightly. I’m sure Tigertown Rick can give all the info about that game. Thanks for mentioning my tigers.
