1st year Jobs at MSU…

Why do we usually hire people to run our athletics that its their first time in that position? Our past few AD’s are first timers and coaches are usually coordinators….
this year we have a first timer AD who hired a first time head coach who hired a first time DC.

It's not easy to get people to come to Starkville. It's not Starkville itself as much as it is that Starkville is a long way from anywhere. It's not just athletics either.

You going to pay up ? This came from a guy whose family has its name on multiple public things at MSU. THEY paid up, and that's what they say. You don't have a 17ing clue about anything you spout off about here. Honestly I don't know why you are still tolerated here. You are the LEAST knowledgeable poster about anything MSU I have ever seen on any subject concerning MSU. I honestly I think you are paid to stir up crap for clicks. You have to be a professional troll.

Also coaches aren't dumb. They know where State is positioned in the sec landscape. Very few coaches want to battle from a disadvantage. Because their career depends on winning.

Yep. We certainly aren't the loveliest village on the plain and we don't have an amazing downtown square and we are not located on the West End of the Fastest growing city in the south where our hated arch-rival wearing gosh-awful orange to church out-numbers us 250-1. But what we do have is a Mayor and Board of Aldermen who understand the University is only reason their unimpressive little town exists! ****

I'm talking athletics specifically, which is what the OP pointed out. Those are big money jobs and people move to undesirable places all the time for big money jobs. And we don't have to have the best....we just need competence and good fits.

I would agree with you on everything else. Academics, general society, etc. Starkville is a small town that isn't close to any big city. So, it simply has to grow on its own and embrace MSU as its economic driver, and also embrace rurality. We've all discussed this stuff ad nauseum, there's no easy way out.

I want to disagree here but any place that’s unwelcoming and overpriced is ultimately egregiously overpriced.

Oxford is a better music town than Starkville so I consider it more welcoming — but geez the real estate market is…

DD…I am of a mindset that these things have connectivity in ways we (as fans) don’t always see (e.g. the families, the fishbowl they’ll live in)

Lastly, there is the “stepping stone” nature of MSU. It’s not a destination job. Maybe one day someone will make it that, but, for now, we’ll be an opportunity for someone to take a shot at spinning straw into gold

I know Starkville was named after General Stark but I have always wondered why the city leaders have not renamed the city. Stark gives the impression of desolation. Desolation town does give people looking to move a good feeling. Take an ancient city name in Europe and throw new in front of it or just use the name. Aberdeen and Corinth are great examples.

Yes this, combined with the generally held belief that it's a "hard job", no matter the position with the exception of baseball coach. You will be measured against about 14 teams in your league that have more resources than you. For this you get to live in Starkville, which is for some people but not everyone.

Anyone already successful at this level is almost certainly going to have multiple options that don't include the dynamics outlined above. That's why we tend to go with "up and comers" or people with some sort of baggage or quirk that reduces their options.

Because it is one of the hardest jobs in the country that a successful sitting head coach does not want to uproot his family for. Every sport besides baseball. Also the town of Starkville has a stigma, fair or not, that makes it hard to lure coaches. Just reality.

I see no problem with hiring coaches who are in their late 50s/early 60s who have some quirk or baggage. Because once they take that job, it's usually their last stop. And those guys aren't worried about shlt (kids, families, Target) except winning football games.

In basketball/baseball, that dynamic of the hard job is essentially removed. But you still have to deal with the small town thing, no getting around that.

also , you wanted an experienced veteran coach who has built and run a program in our case, the aftermath of Arnett burning the program to the ground essentially. That’s not a situation you bring in a guy who has never even been a HC.

Job we needed done is as much to rebuild as it is to play call.

Couldn't agree more, why is our HEAD COACH calling plays instead of managing the rebuild and team? I'll say it again, you get amateur decisions from amateur coaches hired by amateur ADs!

Inexperienced, not ready to be the head guy, hired a bud who wasn’t ready to be a coordinator. And not that bright. That’s a $h!+show sandwich recipe right there.
