I thought it was bad enough when the Liberty Bowl was locked into the best of the 3 service academies. If Mike Slive ever cuts a deal for an SEC tie-in to play some fixed team in a bowl game, he should be fired.

That's probably the only way that they would get into a bowl. Notre Dame has some similar deals, including the one with the BCS that seems to be written in the sand.

</p>Yep. ND has ties with the Sun Bowl (Big East/Big 12/Notre Dame vs. Pac-10), the Gator Bowl (ACC vs. Big East/Big 12/Notre Dame), the International Bowl (Big East/Notre Dame vs. MAC) and I believe the Fiesta Bowl if they are in the top 8 of the BCS standings.

isn't the naval academy in annapolis, maryland? and i'm sure there are a few navy grads in DC. having them play in washington is probably a very good idea. they may not be an attractive choice to many other bowls, but they will probably sell tickets to this game. the other one they usually play in is in san diego, i think, where of course there is a large navy presence. this actually makes sense for navy, but it wouldn't make much sense for a team in a conference.

which, I don't think is all that bad of a thing.

But yes, the Academy is in Maryland, not to mention the Pentagon in DC. And I agree that it makes sense for the bowl to align with them. All of the service academy's draw pretty well because they are the nations largest employer, and it is kind of fun to watch a team full of guys that are there to actually go to school and play for the fun of it.

I want State to schedule some OOC games with the service academies becuase they would draw a good crowd, and they are good competition, but not so good that we shouldn't beat them. Wouldn't shock me if we lost though- I remember the 91 Liberty Bowl. I know I'd rather watch us play Army, Navy, or Air Force than UAB. Plus, Michie stadium at West Point would be cool to go to, and Colorado Springs would be a nice place to visit.

Navy is covered like a local team in DC, and there is plenty of fanbase there. But it's still stupid. First, it's not going to bring many people into the city who aren't already there. And what if Navy doesn't win 6 games? Or, what if they are a lot better than a bottom tier bowl? In that case, it's stupid for Navy if they are locked into this game. DC could be a decent place for a bowl game. There is plenty to do there, and the weather usually isn't terrible around the New Year. But tying Navy into it pretty much assures that it will always be a lower tier game.

</p>Navy has some other tie ins as well- like the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, and if a team or league doesn't have enough teams to fill the slot, then they just pick an at-large team. If Navy had an opportunity to go to, for arguements sake the Liberty Bowl in place of an SEC team after a 10 win season, they can always turn down the DC Bowl games invitation. This bowl may want to be a lower tier bowl. Especially early on. As the years go on, they may want to move up, but they can always get a tie-in with a conference. Sometimes being a lower tier bowl isn't necessarily a bad thing. A lot of times you get a team that hasn't been to a bowl in a few years and they're just happy to go, and so their fans buy a ton of tickets. Plus, these lower tier bowls are the only game on a lot of times, so they get some good publicity.

To be honest, if we went to the New Orleans Bowl, I wouldn't complain. I prefer the Sugar, of course.

I doubt DC tourism is banking on the Congressional Bowl bringing them that much business regardless of who is playing in it.</p>

what i find funny about the papajohns.com bowl is that it's played in a stadium in a part of town that papa johns probably doesn't deliver to.

And it very well could happen. Last year, 71 teams were bowl eligible. In 2008, there will be 68 bowl berths. It will be very interesting to see if they 1) cancel a bowl game, 2) allow a I-AA team to play (if you do that do you allow a team to play in both the I-AA playoffs and the bowl game?), or 3) allow a 5-7 team to play. I bet they don't choose option 1, given all the money and advertising dollars already invested in the game.
