2 possessions away from top 25

For all of the constant negativity that is always on this board please consider this...this team lost 2 games on the opponent's final posession of the game this year. They are that close to being 5-1 with a win over Mich St and very likely being in the top 25. 2 possessions away, a missed interception vs Wash St, a FG instead of a TD deep in the 4th vs Mich St, a break here or there...but this team is literally minutes away from being 5-1. Great comeback win today and the season is still alive! Go RU!

My first instinct was to laugh and roll my eyes, and a second later, I'm admitting -- as ridiculous as it sounds -- that it's absolutely true.

It sounds crazy at first blush, but we would at least be high in the receiving votes category at 5-1 with a victory over Michigan State. Even with the bad loss at PSU and the cardiac nature of the WSU and Indiana games.

And last year we were 4 plays from being a 3-9 team, what is your point?

We are where we are as a team. We are not a top 25 team, but we show when we play well, we can give good teams a game.

I am thrilled with todays win like we all are, but it is not proof of being a great team.

Its wins and losses that count. Not attaboys, close calls or a play here and there.

we just beat a bad Indiana team that gave the game away. I will still be shocked if we go bowling.

I disagree that this is a bad Indiana team. I think it's actually a pretty decent team, particularly with Sud at QB. You can't ignore the fact that they played OSU well. There other loss was to a decent PSU team.

I just think some people shouldn't be Rutgers football fans. Go root for bama or OSU. You have no joy.

Stop it!! Every team has close games. You can't win every single one of them. So stop with the nonsense. We're 3-3 not 5-1. Just deal with it. Today was a fun win, but we really need to stop with this type of stuff

I appreciate the positive spin of the OP. I can't fathom why it apparently offends some posters. Doesn't he have the right to look at things in a positive light? Who cares how realistic it is. It is hypothetical anyway.

Sometimes the ball bounces your way, sometimes it doesn't. Last year we got a lot of those good bounces. This year, not so much, plus the off the field issues that have compounded things.

I suppose you could argue that Penn State is 5-1 and undefeated in the Big Ten as of kickoff, and they're pretty far from the Top 25.

Though, that's without a Top 5 upset on their resume.

Not saying we WOULD BE a top 25 team, but look near the bottom of the polls after today:

#20/21 Boise State - toasted by Utah State and now 5-2. They won't be ranked next week.
#20/21 Northwestern - toasted by Iowa and now 5-2. They won't be ranked next week.

Temple was right outside the Top 25 and will have an excellent chance to be there tomorrow.

This thread just illustrates there can be a fine line between wins and losses.

And Temple is in a dog fight with 0-6 UCF right now.

That said, sometimes you win all the close games and it makes you seem really good. See: 7-0 Michigan State. Sometimes you lose all of the close games and it makes you seem really bad. See: 3-4 Nebraska. Sometimes you win some of the close ones, and lose some. See: 3-3 Rutgers.

And tonight we won this one on our final possession. Should we count this one as a loss then? No. Similarly, we should not count those previous two losses as victories either.

Let's just enjoy this victory and look forward to smashing Ohio State with Coach Flood and Chris Laviano, "the Best Quarterback" Jeremiah FP Has Ever Seen at Rutgers. :)

Omg we beat Indiana, the perennial doormat of the conference. By a FG.

I just wonder with the expectations some people have for this team, what their expectations are in real life for things.

Can we beat a good team before going crazy, or at least not get blown out by a bad one?

What's important about the game is that Laviano was forced to use other weapons and succeeded. This kid Martin III is for real. I saw some shades of Ray Rice in this kid. He may not have the low end speed Ray had but he's burning defenses for 7 & 10 yard gains. The defense and recruiting is where there is a need for improvement if we are going to beat the top dogs in the B10.

No we don't. It's always fun to speculate. If a chicken had lips he could kiss ya', or if a chicken had hips he'd dance with ya'. There are worse things to contemplate...
