I asked this the other day. Surely people knew Palmeiro and Clark were going to be special, but for every MSU player everyone thinks will be special there are a 100 who last 3 years in the minors and end up getting a regular job.
I really hate that BA Vollmouth kid from USM a couple of years ago taken in the 2nd or 3rd round. He is their Renfroe.... But as of last week he's hitting 0.86 for his career. Prime example of it just not translating.
Renfroe is going to he good if he can figure it out. If Rea can make the sophomore-junior leap that so many have done recently for us he'll be the next Papi. Holder will be an MLB player too. Lord knows about Frazier, but he could potentially be a college hall of game guy.
Lot of MLB talent on our roster sandwiched in between a couple of average guys. It'll be interesting to see if Cohen can capitalize on recruiting.
Speaking of which, Palmeiro's son? Any word?
Gotta speak honestly here.
Rea has a HUGE hole in his swing. I don't know why more pitchers don't throw him up and in or down and in. He's got to learn how to handle those pitches better. His power and ability to drive pitches out over the plate are without question. He's an excellent defender.
Holder either needs to add velocity to his fastball, or he needs to learn a slider or splitter to compliment the curve. Right now it's too easy to look fastball and spit on the curve. When his curve ball is on he is unhittable, but when he's not commanding that pitch, he is walking the tightrope. These things are easy to do though.
Girodo and Ross Mitchell both nibble too much with those sliders. As effective as those pitches are, they are are deadly when they are throwing them ahead in the count.
Renfroe has all the tools but he still has a long way to go to be an impact pro player. He has tremendous upside and with a good work ethic, he will be successful.
We have a lot of talent coming back. I'm excited about the future of the program and where we are headed. I don't know if CWS finals are necessarily sustainable, but there's no question that super regionals and CWS berths should be more commonplace in the coming years.
