Haven't seen it mentioned yet this year -- how many spots do we have?

That is a tricky question...

We can "sign" 27 this year. Technically 25 but the two nonqualifiers from last year(Coman and Samuel) can be counted toward their initial LOI. This will likely require us oversigning past the 85 man limit which we always do anyway to account for future attrition(we are at 81 now, minus 17 seniors, so we likely have 22 spots under the 85 man limit).

IF the cards fall like I believe they easily could, there will have to be some "rearranging" with some of the badly injured commits that we currently have. Several of those guys are likely to end up having to either drop us or accept greyshirt offers...

I'm more concerned with the DE's that are on the board.. We have got to get somebody that pass rush. Period

I added them, assuming you meant Lavon Hooks. But, I really dont know how much of a shot we have with either of those guys.

Andrew Billings listed all the Texas schools as "high" interest .... the guy has a ton of offers across the country that he list as medium interest ....... except 1 school outside of Texas, and that's MSU - kinda nice to be the only out of state school he's interested in - given all of the other teams offering him

Hooks is an OM lean. And coincidentally he just got a 5 star rating. I hear he is a player though. He's legit. I think he used to play basketball and is crazy athletic for his size.

Azzur or Engie, Eddie Johnson, a 6'3 230lb JUCO WR, is also supposedly visiting soon. Is this a new name?

ETA: Nevermind, PJ just answered the exact same question on 24/7

I think it's strange that he has five stars from 24/7 but three star as a composite, though. Did he come onto the scene late?

He had a pile of sacks this year, so he's not a sleeper. I know either scout of rivals doesn't give JUCO players much love.

But anytime David Johnson has an opportunity to over-inflate the Mississippi recruiting class, he will. So yeah, take the rating with a grain of salt. He's still a damn good player though.

I came up with fewer open spots than engie. I was bored at work the week before Thanksgiving & calculated our current scholarships. Feel free to correct any mistakes I made. I won't list names at the obvious positions.

QB - 2
RB - 4
WR - 6, RoJo, Morrow, Lewis, Ricco, Fred Brown, Brandon Holloway
TE - 4, Johnson, Hill, Warren, Walley
OT - 6, Siddoway, Clausell, Muniz, Robinson, Knox, Senior
OG - 4, Gade, Malone, Lawson, Carter
C - 3, Day, Holley, Desper

Offense = 29, 30 if T. Smith returns

DE - 8, Autry, Eulls, Smith, Brown, Harris, Harrison-Gay, AJ Jefferson, Torrey Dale
DT - 6, Jones, Virges, Evans, James, Nelson, Washington
OLB - 5, Skinner, Hughes, Holmes, Wells, B. Brown
MLB - 3, McKinney, Bohanna, R. Brown
CB - 5, Love, Calhoun, Jiles, Redmond, Grindle
S - 7, Whitley, Hughes, Arrington, Market, Jackson, Evans, Antoine

Defense = 34

Special Teams - 2, Swedenburg, Bell, possibly Reed Gordon (snapper) - my understanding is that he's on scholarship.

Total = 65 minimum, 67 if T. Smith returns & Gordon is on scholarship. Of course we normally lose a few during the offseason so we'll probably be able to enroll 20-22 new guys.

How are we looking with our DT prospects?

The lack of committed defensive tackles worries me. Are we leading with any of the DT recruits listed? Seems like we should look to sign 2-3 every single year.
