Just for conversations sake, looking ahead to next years huskers:
QB - unknown (maybe better)
RB - about the same, average
OL - plug and play some RS freshman about the same, average
WR - Morgan, Pierson El and (insert freshman) about the same.
TE - ?

Prediction - will struggle early

DL - maybe slightly better with year under JP
LB - About the same
CB - should be better with experience & an older Jackson
S - About the same, less than average

Prediction - maybe slightly better, real average and not a lot of depth.

Special teams - better

8-4 or 7-5

Bash away

Agree on all. Hoping for improvement on the OL, but certainly not counting on it.

Edit: I do think the record will be better than 8-4 though.

9-3.... A good year is 10-2 and visit to the B1G.

This is the 3rd year of this system....our defense should be top 15 and with health. I think the Oline will be better.

It was solid before the injuries. Tanner and Gates graded out consistently good on PFF.

I laugh at people who think they can predict wins or losses a year beforehand. Seems like what we have here is somebody who is bursting at the seems and just can't wait to tell everybody that we are going to have a disappointing season next year. I mean, why wait until the summer to spread your negativity when you can do it now? Such fun.

We have to try to build more depth and talent in the OL and DL! Until that happens we are a 7-5 or 8-4 team. We should have 1-2 all big ten lineman every year. If we cannot find those guys we cannot run a west coast scheme.

If you can't block them...screen them.
If you can't screen them option them.
If you can't do either...PUNT!

A decade and a half of underperformance, disappointing losses, and blowouts. I'll stick with the trend until it changes.

At what position(s)?

I would think OL has to take a step forward. The only losses are Utter, Hahn, and Whitaker.

You would think that either Raridon, Decker, Wilson, or Barnett would be ready to do at worst as well as Utter did this year. And hopefully at least one of them push Farmer.

The RT position will hopefully improved between Farniok, Conrad, Knevel and Gaylord.

Depth should be improved and there should hopefully be some good competition for a couple spots.

Rip him all you want, but just take a second to imagine what had to be behind him for him to have that spot absolutely locked up with zero threat of losing it.

The captain tag carries a ton of weight. Very few coaches have the ability to bench a player selected captain.

The center position will be better by simple addition by subtraction. I have absolutely zero doubt in this statement.

The problem with the next couple of years is that the talent AND execution can improve but the record may not. We play several teams that are young and talented. I am not expecting tremendous records but I do expect to see better teams if that makes sense. I don't think many really appreciate the talent difference we are up against not to mention depth. One great recruiting class won't make much more than a small dent in the problem

Agree here. Big loss at TE. Teams will keep 8 the box. TA's running is going to hurt us more than we think. 3rd and 6 or 3rd and 12s were doable with TA that will be sorely missed. I know he missed throws, but I'm not banking on someone from Tulane that no one recruited hard. Add no Westy and 3rd downs aren't looking great. Defense of backs will be better even though we lose the leadership. 3 to 4 losses heading to a bowl game. Dreading 2018!!

call me crazy but if teams leave 8 in the box, I'll take even "someone from Tulane that no one recruited hard" to hit the wide open receiver if they are going to cover 4 receivers with 3 defenders.

I'm not sure I agree with the 3rd and long assessment you have made here... those are typically easier to make with someone who can throw the ball, not someone who can scramble. And I'm not saying TL is gonna be a better thrower, because I haven't seen him. What TL will do better than TA did is go through his progressions. He will see the open man better than Tommy ever did. That alone will give us a shot at 3rd down. Frankly, that would have been nice to see against Iowa as opposed to the bombs TA threw on every 3rd down play we had.

Our team was great on 3rd down before the injuries set in...Tommy was the best 3rd down QB in the B1G until about game 7 when the injuries caught up with us.

Also about the same time we hit the two best teams on the schedule. Coincidence? Ha ha

You make good points, but in the games that we lost, Tommy completed something like 35% of his passes. I know he didn't always have a lot of protection and he was running for his life, but he did consistently miss seeing the open receiver in those games.

Tommy was much improved this year and his legs bailed us out often, and I'm glad we had him, but I do think we will be better at getting 3rd and long if the WB can find the open receiver.

Edit: QB not WB

Tommy made a lot of miracle runs and completed alot of miracle YOLO's to folks like Reilly. If he didn't we were in trouble.

Would like to be more consistent and efficient down to down, than hoping Reilly makes another miracle grab on 3rd down to extend a drive.

Facing second and four and third and three more often will be a big help. If everything else stays roughly the same but we get better than average Offensive Line play, good pocket quarterbacking and better special teams play, we will be a significantly better team. If we can develop a legitimate edge rush on defense we'll be even better. Obviously, none of these are givens, but I think there's a better than fifty percent chance that most of them come to pass next year. I think we overestimate how far behind we are relative to other programs. Sometimes one or two things can be the difference between 8-4 and 12-0.

Far, far too dire of an outlook. We should be improved in all areas of the team. Clear favorite to win the west.

I think we will be better at running back. Not that I don't like Newby but it looks to me like Tre is really coming on and going to be a good one. Plus, I think our OL will be improved and maybe by a lot.

Are you RedRover? This team may very well be improved in all areas but so will the teams we will be playing.

Penn St, Ohio St, Wiskey, Iowa possibly Minn or NW
PSU, Wisconsin and NW are the only teams with a returning QB. Of the remaining teams, Nebraska should have the QB advantage if Tanner lives up to his hype. tOSU will be able to make up for the QB inexperience will superior over all talent. I think we stack up talent wise pretty well against the rest with exception of PSU. It all boils down to how these guys are mentally. I don't want to overstate the Same Foltz factor. Outstanding individual. Obviously a great leader and friend of the team. I do think the season long tributes may have been a distraction especially the last couple of weeks.

I see no reason why our O Line shouldnt be better.
Same with D line.
Same with QB.
RB will be good.
