Something isn’t right. He struggled to finish at the Big Ten tournament 2 weeks ago in every match. He looked great in the middle of the season and struggled big time late.
The wrestler from Pitt was a very good scrambler. Hopefully Alex comes back in the next round and finishes takedowns.

I disagree. Facundo was a lot more active than he showed in the B1G Tourney. Heller was just a damn good scrambler. Both of his TDs came after crazy scrambles where Facundo was in deep, and appeared to be in good position, but Heller didn't release his hold, and ended up working around for the TD.

Byers mentioned a few times that this was the match the PSU coaches were most worried about in R1 because they knew how tough Heller could be to score on.
I understand the argument, I guess maybe it’s just adjusting expectations. I’ve wanted him and SVN to show an ability to score on opponents that are hard to score on. That’s what’s made so many of our guys different over the years. If you don’t have that, you have to be an absolute rock and be impossible to take down. Right now, he wants to be the former, but he just isn’t at this point. Which is fine! And even understandable! Just not what I want for him in his future.

174 R1: #1 seed Carter Starocci vs. #33 seed John Worthing (Clarion) (I'lll use JW for him)

Per 1
CStar with a quick single and gets the TD, 2-0. CStar working an arm bar and has JW on his back and in trouble. Pin!!! 1:21 is the time of the fall!!

184 pounds: Aaron Brooks vs. Matthew Waddell, Chattanooga

First period
Single leg shot for Brooks. Waddell tries to fend it off as Brooks hikes his leg up and finishes the takedown with a trip for a 2-0 lead. Cuts to 2-1. AB shoots and scores again as Waddell lost his balance a bit. It's 4-1 with about 40 seconds left in the first. He rides out the period to lead 4-1 after one with 1:15 in RT.

Second period
AB down to start the second. He reverses to 6-1. Then, he cuts to 6-2. Waddell shoots, Brooks counters and scores a takedown. It's now 8-2 with 30 seconds left in the second. The period ends with that score.

Third period
Waddell down. He's out to 8-3. Takedown and cut by AB. It's 10-4. Now, Brooks hammers through a double and goes up 12-4. The riding time point is secured so it's really 13-4, and we'll go with that from here. Brooks working hard for nearfall points but Waddell has fought off the cradle attempts so far. That's it.

AB d. Waddell by major decision, 13-4.

197 pounds: Max Dean vs. Levi Hopkins, Campbell

First period
Scoreless first. Not much more to say than that.

Second period
Dean Is down, and he's out in 14 seconds. They immediately lock back up. Hopkins hit for stalling. Dean now in on a single leg and he finishes the shot to lead 3-0 as he tries to lock in the bow and arrow. He's working hard for it late in the second. And he just might have it. But, he can't fully lock it up before the end of the period.

Third period
They'll start neutral. Dean shoots and scores 15 seconds in for a 5-0 lead. He is just punishing Hopkins on top but can't turn him yet. Tried to cut him but they go off the edge. On re-start Dean trying everything he can for back points to get a major He cuts with 13 seconds to try for a takedown to get it instead. Dean drops down and can't get a takedown as time expires. Dean gets a riding time point.

Dean d. Hopkins,6-1

Everything goes about as expected in R1!
SVN gave a bit of a scare, but I had him as a win.
Facundo met my low expectations with a disappointing loss and looks to throw a serious wrench in all AA aspirations as a huge underdog in tonight’s WB.

Everyone else keeps rolling!!

Damn it, I want to do Greg's match........

Wrestlers shake hands, circle and that will do it.

Despite Facundo's tough match, excellent round. Nice bonus and we were close to even more. Hopefully a wake up for SVN, must be present all the time. Not sure how this compares to other years results after round one, but the wins and the bonus is what we do.

It is usual to see psu in the lead after the first round, they usually don't take the lead until later in day 2.
