PSU has had some level of success is all its sports except for basketball.
For the most part, fans only pay attention to the sports that "do well" (I assume that is the case at most universities)
In actuality, PSU has consistently placed at or near the bottom of the Big 10 in:
Men's:
Cross Country, Gymnastics, Tennis, Golf, Swimming & Diving, Baseball, Basketball (obviously)
Women's:
Softball, Golf, Tennis, Gymnastics, Swimming & Diving, Basketball (obviously)
Several have been "up and down" with occasional finishes in the upper part of conference) Men's and Women's Track & Field etc.
Those that have been consistently successful:
Women's:
Soccer (less so recently), Volleyball
Men's:
Wrestling, Football, Soccer (also less so recently)
That's pretty much it.
The Hockey team had that great post-season run last year, but that was a first. Hopefully will continue to achieve success moving forward.
Women's Hockey, Men's Volleyball, and Fencing (which has "fallen off a cliff") are, of course, not Big Ten sports.
A handful of sports used to be very successful at PSU, until more recent years (Men's and Women's Gymnastics, Field Hockey, Fencing, etc) but have dropped off recently.
Overall, in all of the Big Ten sports in which it competes, PSU's average placing in recent years is just a tad below the mid, and trending downward. That wasn't the case until recent years (the last 8-10 years or so)
