Here’s my concern with those three young guys. The management didn’t have confidence enough in them during the call up period at the end of last season. Instead, in Painter’s case, they signed a washed up starter who had been cut. That feels like a big red flag.
Lots of moving parts with Painter. He may still be all hype and velocity, but he was coming off Tommy John surgery that derailed two critical early development years.

It always felt ambitious to expect him in the majors last season and to be a productive part of a postseason push.

But 2026 is the year they either need him in the everyday rotation or as a trade asset for another key piece.

Just a note since some might question why Dombrowski would not pursue Bader in the wake of the Bichette misfire. Bader is represented by the same agency as Bichette and it’s probably safe to say that in addition to everything else, the idea of the Phillies getting into bed with this agency right after Bo would be a big ask. It’s safe to say that the Phillies aren’t happy with VaynerSports.

It’s a small industry, so these “double crosses” always amaze me. And it gets even smaller in terms of the big market teams that can afford these kinds of mega deals.

That said, I wonder how much of this was Bo vs the agency? Agents know this is a relationship business. And using good cop vs bad cop is a way to do damage control.

Jimmy Rollins should be higher
The bar is so much higher for shortstops of that era. Jimmy likely deserves to be in. He won an MVP and a world title.

But I think he’s widely considered a cut below contemporaries like Jeter and ARod. Even peak Nomar was offensively much better, I think.

I might be wrong but the Phillies did not assume they had a deal unilaterally. That had to come from discussions with the agency. Again, I can’t say with certainty, but I don’t think this would have happened with Boras. First, Boras has a good relationship with the Phillies. Second, I don’t think he would have alluded to a deal without Bichette saying they were good to go. Something happened and it was either Bo or the agent who did something that turned out to really surprise and disappoint the Phillies. The agency is more football focused, their client list of baseball players is a pimple compared to Boras representation. Who knows but something happened.

They didn’t run it back, they got worse.

1- They lost a mainstay in Ranger, a pitcher who at various times in certain seasons was their best pitcher. They let a potential impact pitcher sign in Houston for a contract that was extremely reasonable.

2- They made the call to move on from Nick and replaced him with a player whose HR production has declined substantially over the last three years and who is a career .237 hitter.

3- They go into the year with a 3b’men who they don’t believe is a long term foundation piece and who likely walks after this season. People remember Rolen as being sensitive; Rolen was a warrior compared to Bohm. I can’t believe this won’t impact Bohm. Some would think he has a big year in a show me year. Others might think the pressure adversely impacts his play. We will see.

Right or wrong, the fan base is restless. If they don’t start quickly, the manager will hear a lot of noise. The guy in Buffalo lost his job for not getting the Bills over the hump. It feels similar to me.

As currently constructed, I think the odds are higher of them not winning the NL East.

The Mets have gotten better. The Phillies are a yea older with some stars with spotty injury history. One or two injuries can really derail their season now. They aren’t as deep as they’ve been to your point on Ranger.

read my mind !!

If they’re really infusing youth then bring up Miller to play 3rd and trade Bohm.

Trade him for minor leaguers for all I care
