As Whitey would have said about last night and Schmidt now being 3rd on the single season Phillies HR list: "Hard to believe, Harry".

They’re playing Phillies baseball tonight. The night after scoring 19, they have 1 against the guy with the highest starter ERA in the National League. Sigh. Hopefully, one of their stars has some magic to bring for a win.

Phillies baseball means winning baseball you mean

again, in a league with no great teams except maybe Milw the Phil’s are as good or better than all of them

I'm not a Phils phan, so I haven't been following their season, but they appear to be on solid ground as the 6th best team in baseball (before Saturday's slate), and the distance between them and LA/BOS (the two teams immediately ahead of them) in terms of production is negligible.

Pitching-wise, they have the 5th best staff in baseball.

And they're 9th best at manufacturing runs.

That Mets series does look like it was ugly, but as BrianS noted: it's a streaky game by nature, baseball.

Ffs check the supercomputer in your hand

oh wait, do you have one of those newfangled tv channel switcher things ffs

also it’s baseball so any comparison to the blue hens in cfb as an opponent level comparison is silly
...unless you're playing the Rockies.

They got it done. I give them a lot of credit for that. Chris Sale returns for Atlanta tonight, making last night’s victory all the more important. Sale could give them fits.

Was at the game tonight and the collective fans went nuts on the bohm hesitation as if he was supposed to score on Stotts single
1) Acuna is in RF -- he almost catches that ball - Bohm had to make sure it dropped--
2) Acuna is in RF --- Bhom is the slowest philly Acuna nails him at home easily if he tries to score

Although Acuna's throw was offline trying to get Casty

You have to know what you are up against

We all remember this?

What philly nation should be upset about is Bader not bunting with 1st and 2nd and no outs and the slowest runners on. Olson was playing so off first and mid depth bader bunts down the 1st base side easy sacrifice and now you have gained a base for your slower runners

Luckily it worked out anyway with marshy striking out instead of hitting into a DP

Not sure what advanced metrics you were using for those rankings but wins is the only metric that counts in team sports and the Phils have the second best record in baseball.

That said I don’t want them to meet the Mets in the playoffs. Ever since the second game of the London series the Mets are like kryptonite to the Phils.

I'm not using advanced metrics. I'm looking at their ability to generate runs and prevent runs. Baseball 101.

At the time of my previous post, the Phillies are 5th best in baseball at preventing runs from being scored on them, and 9th best at generating runs. I just checked, and they remain in those positions as of the close of business on Saturday.

This gives you a clearer idea of how good a team actually is.

Teams with higher run differentials are better than teams with lower run differentials, so while you might see a team with a superior RD in 2nd place, that would be a likely indication that they've gotten a bit unlucky, while a 1st place team with a lower RD has gotten lucky. Record in 1-run games can also be a sign of good luck/bad luck, though the Phillies are within the margin of error (22-18) which is about what you'd expect, suggesting they have not been especially unlucky or lucky in those situations.

Can't blame Bader. That decision was on the MANAGER! I like Rob Thompson, good baseball man. But, I did say to myself Bader should be bunting here. Oh well, we lucked out.

I would nominate Schwarber as the slowest Phillie. He runs like his feet are tied together. This team doesn’t play small ball. It’s like they are incapable of doing it when necessary. Topper doesn’t seem to ask guys to bunt or play small ball either. Maybe for good reason? I have no idea. I thought the same thing in the past, then I saw Rojas try to bunt twice and it was atrocious. It seems to be a lost art in today’s game.

Bohm is so incredibly slow. I don’t think it’s even a debate here. Schwarber is no Rickie Henderson, but at least I’ve seen Schwarber take extra bases. Bohm is a station to station guy - I can’t believe a guy who looks as athletic as he is is so slow twitch.
